Overclocking Ivy Bridge

I am planning to build a new Ivy Bridge computer, I7 3770.

 

Are there any simple instructions anyone can give me to overclock it?

 

Does it need cooling?

 

All I want is to build it and overclock it. I don't want to play with different settings.

 

I have never overclocked before and am only considering it if is economical.

When you get your chip I would suggest checking out some of the more popular overclocking stes like:

That what I did when I was OC my Sandy Bridge. Usually, you can find a good step-by-step tutorial, even with screenshots. First time I did it I was able to take my chip up to 5GHz. And yes, you will need 3rd party cooling either going with air or water. I went with Noctua NH-D14 air cooling for my rigs.

The Asus boards (maybe others) have a simple OC function in the bios,

or a button on the MB, or even via software.

 

It may not give the highest possible result but it is as simple as pushing a button.

 

What ever method you decide on it's pretty much a must to get a upgraded CPU cooler .

Before overclocking be SURE to get a very good cooler. Something like the Noctua NH-D14 or the Corsair H100 would be great.

 

Also, I see in your original post that you said you want the '3770'. - This chip has a locked multiplier and your overclock headroom will be vastly dampened. I would strongly recommend that you buy one of the 'K' series chips.

Please don´t use that Asus software, ot others EVER!

 

Overclock is easy, when you take it easy, and read the guides, good luck.

 

BTW why not get the i7 2700K instead?

It is great. Good cooling is always a sensible idea whether you want to overclock or not and there is plenty to choose from, the Noctua being one of them. Do test the waters before overclocking though - you may not even find it necessary to do it at all, it depends what else you do with your computer. Just because you can overclock, doesn't mean you have to!
