...

Imho the MS Flight does a lof of good things, but marketing and communication department needs some work. A LOT of work...

Somebody over at MS seriously needs to get fired. Such elation over the promise of the upcoming Alaska release, then this silly nonsense? Seriously??

There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.

Because I have enough problems in my life (really a lot!, but then probably so do you) without adding to them over what is only a video game.

thanks for saying this - goes along with not taking forum comments too seriously!

back on topic - Alaska (unless it's bundled with a helicopter) is not a purchase "need" for me. My life has changed a bit, my game time (and available leisure money) has been reduced, and I still have plenty to do in Hawaii. The Cub - either with or without cockpit - is (to me) a lesser variation of the Maule. Not criticising it, just already have a plane that can do what the Cub does.

Thanks again, LFT, for this post and others you have made - I appreciate your thoughts.

Hate to add fuel to the fire here, but the Carbon Cub, while an amazing STOL aircraft, is not even a practical airplane for the bush country such as Alaska. Empty weight is 900 and you only get about 420lbs of useable weight out of the max 1320lbs (2 pilots already alone are like 400lbs). That does not leave much room for simple cargo like rifles, survival supplies, rations, etc. So, for missions and jobs, you won't be using the CC for anything other than sightseeing. If anything, they should have at least included the famous Super Cub which can take much more cargo.

That's the lsa restrictions. If you have a full ppl, you don't have that restriction. Remember that this thing has a 180hp engines de-rated to 80hp! She's got a lot of overhead left.

It should climb like an F-18 with the 180 hp engine, but more importantly, some fields in Alaska are impossible to get in an out of without a STOL aircraft. BTW, here is a list of runways in Alaska, showing there are plenty of places to fly.

Be patient.

Let's refresh what Joshua Howard (Microsoft) said about Flight back in February:

The world wants this product. I’d rather ship it and continue to develop it as an online game than hold it back

much more.

So let’s get a good experience out there, validate it and respond to what customers want. That gives us the time to understand really where the need and the desire is and then we can extend the product as we go.

We knew from the beginning that we wanted to build a product that had a fairly universal appeal.

The game has been tuned to be challenging but still fun. And, it doesn't completely overwhelm you with details so that you can't possibly succeed. All through the product, from the implementation of the mouse to the way the missions have been developed...the tutorial, the flight assist, we're really trying to keep an eye toward "What is it going to take to let a completely inexperienced noobie come into the experience and have fun?"

And just because Microsoft appeals to "a completely inexperienced noobie", they say: - "You’ll also receive a basic version of the Carbon Cub. Get ready to tackle the Alaskan wilderness, coming soon on Games for Windows—LIVE and Steam."

Although I only use (and buy) Deluxe airplane, I still understand the concept.

Joshua Howard also said back in February:

We also found that some of the hardcore users were not realizing there was as hardcore a simulator as there was...that in some sense, they were being turned off by how easy to use the product was. While easy to use is part of our vision for the game, we didn't want that "simmer" to think that this product was less than something they were interested in.

Then Howard explain "Deluxe airplane" = "For the user who really continues to want all of that deep

articulation inside the cockpit."

Do you really think we never will see more Deluxe airplane? :friends:

Howard said:

Actually the simulation in here is a more robust simulation than we’ve ever seen. It’s a more robust flight model under the covers than FSX ever had. The airplanes in this are more finely tuned than any of the airplanes in our products have been. We’ve had the luxury of time and a better engine.

I agree. Therefore MS Flight has become my first choice among simulators. :Nerd:

Welcome Alaska Wilderness Expansion!!!!

Being that it appears that nobody can post a link where it is clearly stated that "basic" equals "no cockpit", I was thinking that Basic could also mean a cockpit with basic instrumentation for a Cub, rather than the glass cockpit that comes with the Carbon Cub, which would be alot more work to design. All you would get in the basic version would be Altimeter, Compass. Airspeed, Tach, Oil pressure and temp gauges and possibly a turn and bank indicator. The deluxe, when available would have the glass cockpit. I saw some light aircraft glass cockpits on a flight sim site for around $25-$35 dollars just for the cockpit, so apparently there is alot more programming to get one of those ready for sale.

Regarding "basic" and "deluxe" I'd probably just follow the in-game nomenclature:

In the "hangar" all aircraft with a cockpit, regardless how frugal that may be such as the Stearman's, and checklists available are called "deluxe". The VC-less A/C are invariably called "basic". OK, I can only speak for the Redtails P-51 as it's the only VC-less aircraft in my hangar, but from what I've heard so far the other warbirds are also called "basic".

I'd be really surprised if "basic" all but suddenly meant something different from what it had until now - but we'll see in a few days.

Apart from these considerations I'd see the Alaska release as seriously "broken" if the only A/C to be released with it would be a VC-less Carbon Cub. With the Icon remaining the only amphibian for those 150+ seaplane bases for the time being? The Maule as the only half-way serious cargo hauler for how many thousands of square miles? C'mon devs, that must be some kind of silly joke? You better got some true ace up your sleeve (insert favorite heavy bush-plane, amphibian or airliner here) or your customers are going to have you for breakfast (at least verbally)...

What "Hangar" are you talking about? If it is the one in the game, there is no mention of Deluxe or Basic in the Hangar in the Flight program. I have not seen a mention of Deluxe on any of the markets.

Here are the listings in the Game Hanger:

  • All
  • Piston
  • Trainer
  • Fixed Wing
  • Stol
  • Amphibian
  • BiPlane
  • Tour
  • Cargo
  • Passenger
  • Very Light

That's it....

It's in there at least twice... in the pop-up when you mouse-over a plane in the Hanger selection, and also in the description of the plane at the top of the screen after selecting it.

NO, unfortunatly they said deluxe version, so I'm doubtful, but secretly hoping...

since we've managed to scrabble six pages of conjecture out of a few sentences already, it should be mentioned that the only rational use of the word "version" in the announcement would be if the carbon cub is available in a separate version part from the one you get with the pack.

OK, I see that. I haven't purchased any of those planes that say basic. Do they still say basic even if you purchase them? If so, then it would appear that basic= no cockpit. I can't imagine flying around Alaska taking off and landing on 600 foot dirt strips without a cockpit.

Indeed. That is why we are not happy.
