Put your DLC folder on your Flight drive!

Recommended Posts

Guest

Most people carefully choose on which drive they want to install Flight but leave the other GFWL folders, like the DLC one, default. Don't. Afaik the DLC folder is not a folder where some sort of installers are downloaded to after which stuff gets installed into the Flight folder. The DLC is used directly by Flight. So if you have Flight on an SSD or on a drive that has good performance or that has a lot of room (or whatever reason you picked a specific drive for Flight) make sure to also put the DLC folder on it!

You can change the default location of the DLC (and other GFWL related items) with the GFWL software. When you change the DLC folder this way, the program will tell you you will have to download all DLC again. To prevent this from happening (specially if you read this by the time you already downloaded a few gigabytes worth of Alaska), you could do is this: first make a backup of the current DLC folder. Then change the location using GFWL (ignore the 'you have to download everything all again' message). Then copy the backup to the new location. The DLC will be seen by Flight instantly without the need to redownload everything. (Don't really know if you manually have to remove the DLC from the old location... it's been a while since I changed my DLC folder this way.)

I thought I'd share this tips before Alaska is released.

Nice tip. So does Flight magically know that the folder has moved?

Thanks J, I guessed that needed an explanation. Wow, my SSD Flight combo is fast enough already! It'll be interesting if it makes much of a difference. Or I'll move it all bak! I'll report back, or hopefully others can before me.

Those snow covered roofs look gorgeous, can't wait to try!

Open GFWL, go to the settings and you will see where your DLC folder is.

Thanks for the help.

I just bought a new 120GB SSD for my boot drive. I grew out of my first 64GB SSD. Now that I know I can move it reliably, I guess I'll leave the Flight DLC there for now to see how big it is.

This is strange, when I am about to start downloading Alaska, it seems like it wants to store it on my C-partition even though I have set my "flight sim drive" as the target for everything within GFWL. What gives?

Just tried manually moving things after changing the setting in the GFWM tool, starting Flight gave me a corrupted installation message and sent me on my way back to the desktop.

I'm redownloading what I had before into the new spot, so we'll see if Flight will play nice or force a reinstall and all the hassles that are involved with that.

Follow-up: looks like an entire reinstall, which does not make for a pleasant day for me. It's this strange quirk where the Microsoft OS does not want to install the Microsoft game. Who knew Windows 7 would be so much fun...

While it's downloading it seems to store the files in your temporary user files directory.

Thanks for the location finding tip! Mine are already all in my C drive, which is my 120gig SSD, yay. No work to be done.

Now going back to attempt my FOURTH reinstall of Flight.

It works on The Big Island, after downloading for the second time from the Flight web site. Trying to use GFWM to download and install bombs, with no real clue as to what went wrong. Trying to add the DLC through GFWM causes the corrupt message to appear and escort me back to the desktop. I'm hoping that installing the DLC from inside Flight might get me back in the air. But I wouldn't bet any $$ on it...
