I used to use REX-OD until I discovered the historic weather mode. I did try essentials a bit but just found it too slow and the weather change and loading is just soooo slow and unsmooth. AS2012's direct weather control just works great for me since you KNOW what the weather is going to be when you take off and land, no crazy wind changes enroute to the airport. The best feature is the historic weather, I usually fly later at night and with REX I always had to use night time weather while flying during the day. In that respect AS2012 has totally changed the way I fly now no matter how good REX is until they have that feature I will never stop using AS2012.

For the record I DO use REXOD textures and AS2012 for weather.

I haven't ugraded to AS2012, but ASE for me is a more stable platform at the moment. REX-E seems to be suffering some injection issues for some and they arem working on a SP at the moment.

Keep in mind that the change from REX (and REX OD) over to REX-E (Essential) involved a complete rework of the weather engine and also came for free. So there's nothing stopping existing REX customers from upgrading to REX Essential.

Just stating this because I think that the REX-E engine does a lot better than the former REX one. For me, it offers the best weather impression so far.

For the folks looking for REX-E Overdrive, it may take some time though, but I did not regret deleting REX OD and 'just' installing REX-E so far.

On the historical weather feature, that's a nice one for sure. I've actually asked if this could be implemented in REX-E. And here's the answer. http://www.realenvir...er-data-needed/

1. About the same but depends on what size textures and layers of clouds you have enabled.

2. AS2012

3. Neither, HDEv2 for sky and clouds, see Ed Cox (edetroit) screen shots. Not a fan of most of the REX clouds sets as they look too hard, sharp and unnatural to me.

Agree with this. REXE does have a few minor UI and injection issues, though..Same as others, using REXE textures with ASE injection (via SimConnect) for now..REXE was free though, so I'm not complaining!

Indeed REXe is better and rex,but still have problem deal with wind.

For example,i flight in boston area yesterday, and i got huge wind change let my md-11 need to climb or descent to maintain IAS,maybe will fix later..

AS2012 for weather engine.

REX for textures.

AS2012 if you can't buy both.

I use AS2012, for both weather and textures. I've found it's been better on my frames than REX was.

I am considering buying the upgrade package for AS2012. I am interested to see how it compares directly to REX-E and ASE.

Anyone else here that can say freeware textures look better then REX / AS2012 textures?

Can AS2012 set the surface wind? Don't think you can do that in REX E.

Can't comment on REX since we that have OD version still can upgrade to REXE. :Sigh:

So, I recommend AS2012, it's excellent, some textures are even better than REX, people just need to give them a chance.. in ASE times I also used ASE for weather and REX for textures.. because ASE didn't have any textures! But AS2012 does have them and they are great! I don't have any problems using AS2012 with S-turns, pauses, wrong winds aloft, long time to inject weather,.. and other things REXE users are reporting.

Is it true you can limit the number of cloud layers with ASE to 1? I like using real world weather but that horrible cloud rendering bug that plagues FSX ruins it for me. Can't stand flying through a thick cumulus cloud and being able to clearly see a whole layer of baby cumuli right through the haze. I figure if I could just have a single cloud layer I wouldn't get this problem.

I was actually a tad disappointed by REX-E it didn't seem as feature rich as what it was hyped up as.
