July 11, 201213 yr Anyone running this combo? I was careful to check the compatibility chart on Noctua's site and they had a big green check mark, next to the Asus Sabertooth Z77, but the NH D14 has 3 pin fans and the Asus MB has 4 pin CPU plugs.
July 11, 201213 yr 3 pin fan connections will fit on 4 pin fan headers. Do you own this cooler already or will you be purchasing one? If you don't already own it, you may want to reconsider the purchase. It's a good cooler, but it's a behemoth and its not cost effective. You would be better off with a closed-loop water cooler like the Corsair H80 or H100. Similar price and performance but they won't put as much strain on your motherboard with all that weight pulling downward.
July 12, 201213 yr Author Unfortunately, I already have it installed. I guess, I lose some features by missing the 4th wire. Have the the same problem with the case fans, so I'll probably just connect them straight to the power supply. Maybe, somewhere down the road, I'll swap the Noctua for a Cosair and use the Noctua for a boat anchor or something.
July 12, 201213 yr Author Dazz Yes, the cpu fans are connected to the MB cpu plug's. I'm amazed at how quiet the fans are. Even the case fans (Coolermaster HAF932 advanced) which are connected directly to the PSU and running at full speed all the time are quiet compared to my previous setup. As this is a complete new rebuild, I still a lot of tweeking to do (just got it up and running this morning), but so far, it looks like a keeper.
July 12, 201213 yr I'm amazed at how quiet the fans are. That sounds great! and consistent with what I have seen elsewhere. I am just now building a new FSX system and I think the D14 is what I will go with too. If you don't already own it, you may want to reconsider the purchase. It's a good cooler, but it's a behemoth Yes the H80/100 were tempting but all the comments I have read complain about the noise. These choices are proving harder than I thought. I wonder if I have any chance of fitting a D14 into a MID-tower, a Solo II say.
July 12, 201213 yr Author Snowpig The D14 is BIG and not cheap either. I would do some research first. I also used low profile memory sticks just in case. The H80/100 was my first choice, but like you, I read a lot of reports about noise from the fans. I guess it is something recent and depends on how lucky you are.
July 12, 201213 yr Snowpig, What is your target OC? If its 4.5 or 4.6 then you are better off with the cooler master 212 Evo for $35. Its small and very effective. But it is fairly small...and does not have the fin real estate like D-14 hence its not suitable for > 3.7Ghz Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
July 12, 201213 yr I have the new ASUS Sabretooth Z77 with a Prolimatech Megahalems HS which looks very similar to yours I have two fans in the push pull setup. My heatsinks on my Corsiar Dominators rest or touch the Fan but no problems. I run the Ivy Bridge 2500K at 4.8 GZ with temps at 50-55 running FSX or BF3. Timothy Murphy
July 12, 201213 yr Author I don't do extreme overclocking, so I'm not overly concerned about temps. Right now at idle, it's perking along at 32C. I'll start bumping it up a little tomorrow.
