Flightsimming since the ZX Spectrum

Jerome,

Aaaah! Flightsimming on the ZX Spectrum. I still have the Sinclair Spectrum in my personal museum (my attic) together with a few cassettes amongst which Psion's Flight Simulation.

Hi again Stephen,

As promised some more feedback on my flight a short while ago from EKRN to EKSA. I changed the sim time to daylight, so the clouds could be visible, as it is currently night there.

Take-off from Bornholm was fairly hazy and the sky and visibility level looked fantastic, very realistic:

http://tinyurl.com/8jvwkfs

I was able to make out the clouds in the distant upper horizon, something which added to the immersion-level and gave me a real feeling of being there:

http://tinyurl.com/9e2vd9b

Leaving the island with the city below me, the haze level was very apparent in the way I could see Bornholm and the distant airport behind me:

http://tinyurl.com/9zknfy3

For some reason the haze suddenly disappeared though, and even though I was now a bit higher, the distant city and airport now seemed clearer, which didn't seem quite right:

http://tinyurl.com/8p4wku2

Panning around the outside of the aircraft on my way to FL 270, I was able to see distant weather around me:

http://tinyurl.com/9zll7zr

http://tinyurl.com/95hk77o

Then all of a sudden a whole bunch of clouds appeared out of nowhere, they hadn't been there a second ago:

http://tinyurl.com/8ugfdmh

http://tinyurl.com/9sykx2t

http://tinyurl.com/9643vpb

I'm not quite sure how that happened, as you can see from the above screenshots, those clouds appeared out of nowhere, just like that!

The clouds appeared rather flat and lackluster enroute:

http://tinyurl.com/9f42vfd

The same location and the same angle as above, with the identical cloud set, but after I had shutdown OpusFSX and loaded AS 2012:

http://tinyurl.com/8bk5d4s

Arriving at Saeby (EKSA) I fired up OpusFSX again and was amazed, the sky looked spectacular:

http://tinyurl.com/9ydaerf

http://tinyurl.com/8fnhsyt

http://tinyurl.com/8kktmrr

http://tinyurl.com/9ryp2k5

So it's almost like everything looks great up to a certain altitude, and then suddenly everything changed, the clouds and sky went from realistic to bland and dull, the visibility level had jumped suddenly before that too, very strange. And then upon arrival, after having briefly changed to AS 2012 and then swapped back to OpusFSX, everything looked so amazing.

I'll do some more flying tomorrow and see if it really does have something to do with the altitude I'm flying at. The weird sideways clouds from yesterday are definitely gone though, didn't experience anything even remotely similar today.

Thanks for your magnificent support Stephen, it's very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Jerome

Hey Jean-Jacques,

Wow, that's great...brings back many fond memories :-) I can still remember the excitement when the graphics jumped from CGA to EGA...lol. I used to be down the road from Braine too...in Watermael-Boitsfort.

Cheers,

Jerome

Jerome,

Re the lackluster clouds, could it be the textures you are using? Are they native FSX or are they from another application?

Hi Jerome

Of course METARs are updated at NOAA after certain intervals and reflect the most recent reported weather. The LWE downloads and interprets these. If there has been a new METAR update, that could reflect the more recent weather and cloud build up. Perhaps two hours ago there was very little cloud and with the new METAR report, a few hours later, the cloud had built up. The LWE can only go on the data that is reported in the downloads. I suppose in an ideal world the METARs would be updated every minute but that does not usually happen, 30 minutes or more is the norm.

FYI - in the present LWE if a reported cloud base is very low the LWE assumes a stratus instead of cumulus layer to try and match reality as closely as it can. Other engines might just display fluffy clouds as eye candy who knows, but that is not our game. Of course all the eye candy depends entirely on the cloud and sky textures installed, and these bitmap images are selected and displayed by FSX not us. You will have a detailed 600 x 600 mile weather region to try out soon (will probably be banned from Avsim for saying that!).

I have got into the habit of forcing a live weather update just before take off if I suspect the weather differs from 'actual', but I do fly a lot from EGNX just down the road so I can look out of the window.

Regards

Stephen

Good ideas, but, the joystick buttons that I am using are 14, 15, 16, from joystick 0. In the grand scheme, this little bump can be ignored for now. Everythingelse is working great. I am looking forward to TrackIR adding OpusFSX to their game list so I can use TkIr with OpusFSX DHM.

Thanks, everyone, for your attempt to help out.

Regards,

Hi Danny

Just checked, we actually request button events for inputs 0 thru to 31 for joysticks 0 thru to 5 inclusive. So I am afraid we are already asking FSX to report on any button presses from joystick 0, it is just displayed as joystick 1 in the Spy window.

Regards

Stephen

We are still waiting for TrackIR to get back to us and add OpusFSX to the game list.

Please check our Flight1 forum pages for details of this and the LWE upgrade.

No problem Stephen. Everythingesle is working fine and I am enjoying the software. One item I would like to bring up is use with helicopters. I fly mostly helos and would really enjoy the abliliy to have an approximately 50 hz oscillation in the vertical and horizontail directions to simulate vibrations normally seen when flying helos. ECZA allows one to adjust just such an oscillation set, both in frequency and force. Perhaps as your software moves along you could consider a section for helos.

By the way, the weather engine is worth every penny. Just fabulous when used with REX Essential textures.

Hi Danny,

If you don't mind, could you kindly post what REX Essential textures you're loading so we can try them out seeing that you seem to be getting great clouds and some of us aren't getting consistently good results. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Jerome

Hi Robert,

I've been using REX Essential textures and it's very strange how the clouds on yesterday's flight looked really great at the beginning and end of my flight, but up at FL 270 and not long after departure they suddenly changed and looked totally different:

Not sure why that is.

Hi Danny

That's an excellent idea consider it in the pipeline, we will do as you say but will also look to capture real-life 3D accelerometer data in the future an give that option for ultra-realistic vibration effects. News of our progress with the LWE upgrade will continue to be posted on our Flight1 forum pages. I will also post news as soon as we finish the geodesic mapping of the new live weather into the flight sim world!

Probably new up to date METAR reports available, reporting latest weather with cloud build up.

Stephen:

Use of real vibration dynamics is preferred, always. Being able to adjust the vibration dynamics is a plus. There is a large helo community that I am certain would really use a software package that simulated with reasonably accuracy helo vibration dynamics.

Hey Jerome,

I think what your seeing with the clouds is correct. In the low level picture you are only a couple of thousand feet from the clouds so they show more detail. When you are flying at FL2XX they are much further away. You are not used to seeing it because traditional wx engines will stop showing you the low level cloud as you go higher. Well thats my theory anyway!

A sequence to show low cloud on the approach to Bristol (Thanks to UK2000 for the great EGGD scenery!)
