Framerates drop in low visibility between cloud layers

I could definitley tell a difference between DXT5 and 32bit on my old card. However as Word Not Allowed said if you've got a decently powerful card there's virtually no effect. I only use 1024 textures however I've not been brave enough to crank them up yet.

Exactly. Funnily enough, on my 580 I virtually see little to no difference in normal use between 1024 and 2048, but there is huge difference between 2048 and 4096.

Running 2048 in dxt5 might be a good compromise for many.

I've got a 670, maybe I'll try out 2048. Is there a noticeable visual difference?

Definitely imo. It's also quite a visual jump to 4096 but the performance drop is too much.

Depends on what monitor you've got. I see a much more noticeable difference on a 24" 1080p/1200 monitor (even more noticeable on a 27" at 1080p) but on a 27" at 2560x1440 the PPI is high enough to make increasing the cloud resolution less noticeable.
