AHCI or IDE mode for sata disc?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know that there´s a lot of debate around this issue on the internet, but no clear answers.

But, I´m going to build a new rig, mainly for FSX/FS9. I will use an SSD for the OS and another SSD for FSX.

So I would like to hear about you Simmers experience; What mode you install the HD´s in? Is there any gain in installing the SSD for FSX in AHCI rather than IDE?

I also plan to use my current "old" 1 TB HD (7200 rpm IDE-mode) for storage and other programs than MSFS. Would this be able to run in AHCI mode?

Other than that, I will follow Word Not Allowed´s excellent guide.

Best Regards,

Anders

Sure. You should always use AHCI with SSD's. You get no Native Command Queuing in IDE mode, which means the SSD can't process more than a single operation at a time.

Yes, there's no problem with running mech drives in AHCI mode.

On a side note, your board has no SATA III support, which means that the latest SATA III SSD's won't always run at their max speed. In practice and under most loads, FSX in particular, it's not going to make much of a difference since it will hardly ever want to transfer more than those 300MB/s SATA II is capable of

Thankyou Dazz,

for the answer. And yes, my current board does not, but my new board will support Sata III, so the SSD´s should get optimum running conditions.

I guess that the same goes for my current DVD-drive (now running IDE)?

Best Regards,

Anders
