"Officially licensed by Boeing" - Quo vadis?

Recommended Posts

In this moment, seems we have a new marketing strategy, that many Flightsim (FS9/FSX/P3D/X-Plane) developers are claiming for their products to be "officially licensed by Boeing".

My question: how they can get such qualification and an approved license by Boeing?

Cheers

Kai

Same way a coffee cup maker gets a license to put Boeing in the cup. It's has nothing to do with the quality it is just about the name and logo.

One way to test the Boeing license is to verify that the product is released with Boeing official documents such as flight manuals. It is definitely difficult to get approval to release actual flight manual documents.

Yeah, also Abacus 787 is "Officially licensed by Boeing", although it has nothing to do with real 787.

This is not new folks. Papa Tango "licensed" the American Airlines, Lauda, names, logos, etc. Didn't mean squat then, except that PT attempted to leverage that into one of the biggest attempted scams in the history of the hobby.

The modern version is simply a license issued by Boeing that has rules that govern how the model of their aircraft and its logos will be used or not used, as the case may be. It is a way of protecting both their IP and their copyrights. This is a good thing for Boeing and for us. Any commercial company attempting to use IP or copyrighted material (logo, name, etc.) better have a license from the likes of Boeing, Airbus and others, or they are liable to lose their shirts, so to speak.
