Why would you buy FS 11?

If we use X-Plane X as an example, it's missing airports, complex airplanes, REX like features for weather, AI, seasons, ORBX like sceneries, ATC, etc, and there are simmers that are still excited about it.

I'm not sure if you've ever used X-plane 10? Because only 1 of those 'missing' that you list are actually genuinely missing.

It has airports, plenty of airports, payware and freeware, sure the default install only has 20 or so airports 'detailed' more than just the runways, but the 'let the market provide' attitude is what most of us would want to see in FS11 anyway, the default airports always need work in FSX.

Complex aircraft? You need to see the work FlyJSim (Dash-8 Q400 and a 727 soon), Ddenn Design (Bombardier Challenger 300), Dan Klaue (ERJ 140), Javier Rollon (CRJ 200, 777 real soon now) are doing, they're all complex 'systems simulation' aircraft. Sure there's a lot of other stuff that's 'lite', but FSX has bucketloads of lite and down-right-iffy payware too. Or is this code-words for 'PMDG haven't done their NGX there yet!'?

REX? Well, there's REX for X plane, I'm not sure how much more REX-like you could get tbh *shrug*.

Seasons? That's there just fine. ATC is there in the base sim, it's not perfect, but apart from VFR it does the job better and more realistically than FSX's default ATC, sure a 3rd party spruce up would be nice...

ORBX-like scenery, well, that's up to 3rd parties, surely, there's plenty of *good* scenery for XPX out there.... I think what you really mean here is 'ORBX scenery', and you need to take that up with FTX.

AI is the biggest, most glaring problem, with XPX tbh. The standard AI is simply pathetic, it makes no attempt at realism, and you end up with shuttle-carrier 747-100s taking off from 2000' runways. And unfortunately it looks to be a fairly difficult problem to solve for 3rd parties - although some are trying. A little bit more support for 3rd parties here would help.

There's a lot of *good* stuff in XPX that FS11 would need to learn from.

Of course, it's not going to happen, MS won't do FS11, Cascade are doing 'whatever', and what's left of Aces are probably staying at MS, if they were to leave like the earlier Aces team, they'd probably want to go to cascade and work on scuba sims anyway.

So we're left with P3D and it's license issues verses XPX, which is at least available and actively progressing.

Thank you for your excellent insight. My conclusion was based primarilty on this thread:

I have about 100 payware airports for FSX, about 50 payware airplanes, and some amazing VFR sceneries. So, what is missing for me in FSX is improved ATC. I would only consider XPX when there are more planes, airports, sceneries, etc. BUT, I'm not about to switch when there's so much missing compared to my FSX setup. I've read that it's a smooth sim, that's a big plus for me.

BTW: Can someone point me where there's a REX for XPX? Is the REX version of XP9 compatible with XPX?

MSFS

I would buy FS11 if the Graphics look a lot better. It been 6 years since FSX came out so the new FS should look really good.

Another thing, CODING! I don't want to spend more time Tweaking than flying, FS 11 should be less or equally demanding to FSX.

ATC! It would be AMAZING if I could TALK to it but just making the ATC sound real is good enough.

Flying Dynamics should be more like real life, After all it is a sim.

Scenery and aircraft should be a heck of a lot better looking and "sounding" than one's in FSX.

FS 11 should be backwards compabitile with FSX and FS2004 airplanes, and under da hood work is needed with better coding physics and itmes of that sort. Would use FSX graphically as a base to build on and bring on ability to use muticore computers, and reduce bloated code. Also, use X-plane highway idea and build on the idea of actually in longer term adding a driving and train simulator. It would bring in people that like to drive semi-trucks and trains, and people that want to drive 59 caddy to Vegas and then fly back to Colorado or Utah in Boanaza V35 in style. Already halfway there in fsx just need to automate and build bridges and add stop lights got it made. X-plane is heading that way its oblivous by Austin comments but MS would need to replace some of its bean counters before these ideas got off the ground.

FS 11 should be backwards compabitile with FSX and FS2004 airplanes

But if FS11 is aimed to be backwards compatible with FSX and FS9, that means that a lot of code must remain unchanged. I'd personally prefer if FS11 cancels any compatibility with previous versions so that the code can be updated to today's standards.

I think we are almost there already. That is, if you build your own fast computer and overclock it. Also, if you combine Orbx scenery, REX textures and the AS2012 weather engine. Not to mention some quality add-on planes, such as the RealAir Lancair.

All that said, the only problem with this scenario is that it is a very special niche hobby -- just too bad that someone doesn't create a simulator for the masses, that will run on a mid level computer without tweaking and a bunch of expensive add-ons.

Dream on everyone.

In reply to the OP:

Optimized for better performance. If that was the only improvement I'd be very content, considering all the addons out there already make FSX look spectacular enough. The only thing that makes it hard for people is the kind of hardware needed to make it run well.

Though it would be nice to have better default scenery, because I bet it would take a while for all the essential addons we like to become compatible with the new version.

One of the Main things for me would be to have a solid 60 FPS or at least 30. A another thing I would love to see is for a silulator to come out that has graphics that we see on the playstation or Xbox , when playing games like Gran turismo 5 , I always say to myself I would love to see these life like graphics in the flight sim world . I would like to see better weather being implemented , since it's all about being in the air , better weather immersion would be great, REX essential made much needed improvements in my opinion , but thers a lot more that needs to be done.
