Upgraded OS to Win 7 64 bit; can't run FSX SP1

Featured Replies

Hi all-

Well, after a while of searching I broke down and decided to post here!

Just upgraded to Windows 7 Home. However, I can't install FSX SP1 as it gives me an error that it's not compatible with my current OS.

I see lots of people running it on 7, so I'm sure there's some way to do it. Any help appreicated!

thanks,

Andrew

If the home edition of W7/64 has the compatibility function, install it under WinXP SP2 compatibility mode.

Hi Dave-

I actually heard that (or read it) somewhere, but can't seem to find the setting; seems my only choice among a small list is to run it in WinXP compatibility mode... but that doesn't work.

I'll search again to see how to do this, but if you have any hints it would be great.

Thanks!

Andrew

I never had to choose any compatibility mode when I installed FSX on my W7 installation. I dont got W7 home tho, I got W7 ultimate

It sounds like your original installation of FSX & SP1 was somehow flawed. Take a look here http://www.simforums.com/forums/topic29041.html for installation tips.

Here is the path to allow FSX to run in XP mode on your Win7 PC.

1. Go to Control panel

2. Select Action Center

3. Go to the very bottom left hand column

4. Select Windows Program Compatibility Troubleshooter

5. Click "Next" on pop up window

6. Scroll down to FSX

7. Follow the prompts

Hi hightower,

This is a new computer and I haven't installed SP1 yet - is it recommended to run FSX in XP mode?

I remember seeing a guide somewhere but never really paid attention as my computer was old & I kept most settings pretty low anyway.

thanks!

Andrew

You should not have to run FSX in XP mode. I just did a reformat/re-install of WIn7-64 and it was a straight forward install. Read the guide that I referenced by Nick Needham as to the proper way to install FSX. It works.

Saw that article, but I don't have Acceleration; I have deluxe. I read over it quickly so probably missed what I would do if I don't have it.

Also, I didn't see what to do if FSX is already installed. I'll uninstall if needed.

Looks like a pretty good guide, though.

Why not Acceleration? It has SP1 and SP2+. It has carrier ops and helo hoist among other features. Most addons require it. Highly reccommended!

Most addons? Like what?

I have SP2 installed on my XP system and have never been nagged for Acceleration. Even so, if I got Acceleration, wouldn't I simply have the same trouble installing SP1 as I do now?

Sounds like fun though.

Ok - just tried downloading SP1 from the Microsoft site and it says the file can't be found.

Anyone? Can anyone simply tell me what I need to do to run SP1 & SP2?

thanks,

Andrew

google fsx_sp1_enu.exe - you'll get a bunch of hits - download the SP1 and try again.

Also be sure to Run As Administrator

Check out this MS' FSX and Win7 compatibility chart. I too have deluxe running on Win7. No problems installing it, but sometimes I wonder if there's something to the compatibility. For example, I see a large pole on FSDreamteam LSZH scenery. Look at the last post of this thread.

Installed FSX+Acceleration on 4 computers, P4 XP32 and Vista32, QX6800 Vista64 and Win764, I7 920 Vista64 and Win764, and I7 975 Win764. The only install problem was a hangup caused by a bad memory stick. Never a capatability problem! Downloaded SP1 and SP2 when they first came out and archived them. Installed them one time as a test on 920. No problems!

"Some" addons require Acceleration.
