June 16, 200421 yr I want to fly to Aspen Colorado tomorrow and I need some suggestions on what airport to start from. I am looking for a airport that has interesting surroundings (like in the moutains) and that is no more than 600 to 700 miles from Aspen. Im going to fly one of my business jets there so I would need a airport with a runway long enough so a Citation X, Citation II, or a Beechjet can take off from.Im sure there are alot of interesting airports in FS9 that I haven't been to yet. :-)
June 16, 200421 yr Hi Joseph,I don't know if you've been to this airport before or not, but how about Albuquerque International in New Mexico? And I haven't tried it yet, but there is a scenery for it at www.flightsim.comThe Author is John B.Loney, Jr. and the filename is kabq_v1.zip dated 5-17-2004. ;)Cheers,Jim
June 16, 200421 yr Another choice would be Glacier Park International (north of Kalispell, MT) to Aspen. A bit beyond your requested distince at 725 miles but would certainly be a great flight. For this flight you should surely install Holger Sandmann's scenery of Glacier. Great stuff!Greg
June 16, 200421 yr Actually I've flow to Albuquerque but haven't flow from there yet. LoLGlacier Park International sounds very interesting! I took a look at Holger Sandmann's scenery for Glacier and it looks like a beautiful area.I'm going to wait for a few more suggestions then make up my mind. :-)
June 16, 200421 yr This is definitely a longer flight but I think it could offer good sights for your flight... Try flying from KFAT (Fresno Yosemite Int'l). It is in central california, but it is just west of the mountains, so when you take off and start your eastern course, you'll have mountains all the way. I strongly getting FSGenesis's West Coast and Rockies mesh for this flight.
June 16, 200421 yr If you want to see the coolest mountains in the U.S., I would suggest Jackson Hole (KJAC). The Grand Tetons dominate the western horizon - of course, you'll need FSGenesis or a similar terrain upgrade to experience their true majesty. The distance to Aspen is a little over 400 miles.Marc
June 16, 200421 yr Thanks for the reply guys. :-) So far Glacier Park and Fresno sound pretty interesting.I do agree about Jackson Hole. Sunday I flew from Boise to Jackson hole, then like a hour later I flew back to Jackson Hole. Are there any interesting airports in the mountains of Idaho or northern California? How is the scenery near Palm Springs? Are there any airports near the Grand Canyon that has runways that can handle a Citation X, Citation II, or a Beechjet?
June 16, 200421 yr If you have MegaScenery Palm Springs is great (but I also have re-worked the airport a bit). I fly out of there a lot.I would suggest South Lake Tahoe (KTVL). Lot's of rich people with there cabins and private jets fly out of there. Beautiful scenery if you got the mesh loaded.
June 17, 200421 yr I just finished my flight (sort of) I flew the Cessna Citation II from Glacier Park International to Aspen. I installed Holger Sandmann's scenery of Glacier, and WOW! it was a awsome take off. One day I will have to land at Glacier Park International. The only thing is at about 43 miles from Aspen I suffered a CTD and never got to land. :-mad
June 17, 200421 yr I will try that flight again, but I think next time I will see what the Fresno departure is like. :-)
June 17, 200421 yr Go in wintertime, and download aspen_ski_areas.zip by Lon Gordon. The slopes of Ajax are so faithfully represented that you can almost imaging the Kennedys playing football.I've also got aspen04.zip by Dave Erickson for the airport itself. And be careful on the approach. The offset LDA in FS2002 was mis-placed and would take you right into a hillside. Did they fix that in FS2004?
