What's curious about mentioning ESP at LM ?

 

Might A2A start developing for Prepar3d also in the near future ?

 

I know their models can be ported to Prepar3d, but as far as I know they do not have installers for Prepar3d (?)

Probably, with the notable exceptions of Flight1 and PMDG, most other Devs are either already onboard or are unconcerned about moving your FSX stuff over manually.

if you are at or below the undergraduate level. to my understanding that means, you have to be some sort of student to be legally allowed to use this version, if you are not, then its illegal. at least in germany you have to always show documents to prove that you are a student when you buy academic versions of software. but thats not really ontopic anyway :)

Yeah the only way I can see how this could work out to both RA's an A2As advantage would be to do different kinds of 172. Someone should do a newer one and someone an older one. Since they both like steam more then glass maybe RA should do a 90's version 172 and A2A a 70's version. Or vice versa.

 

Oh well we'll see, I'll probably get both anyway you can't pass up on these two

When I could afford to fly, the local club had multiple models of the C172. Which one you flew depended upon which was available. As a low and slow flyer multiple models of the same aircraft gives me more of a club experience.

on the one hand i am happy to see a2a finally bringing the full accusim to the GA world, i love the cub (and i am not really that interested to fly combat planes within FSX).

on the other hand i don't think its really pushing innovation or anything if 2 of the best FSX aircraft developers release the same model (maybe even in the more or less same timeframe). the dedicated flight simmers will buy both anyway and i am pretty sure both will have their very own advantages... all business reality (and company secrets) aside: the most innovation and win for the flightsim community would be a collaboration of the best developers on an individual aircraft model :)

 

I disagree. Competition is a good thing for the end-user. It forces the manufacturers to provide the best products that they can make and price them competitively. Win-win for the flight-simmer.

While some of you will be disappointed at the civilian direction of the 172 and Piper, I for one am going to be very pleased. I consider the Cub and the Boeing piston both lovely simulations to fly and look forward to more civilian aircraft from them.

True in theory, but keep in mind that this is a very small market. If a developer loses half or two-thirds of his sales because a rival developer comes out with a directly competitive product, that could be enough to threaten the survivability of a business that's probably running pretty close to the bone to begin with. The flight simmers win in the immediate term but lose in the long term if a good developer can't make it.

 

Personally, I'd like to see more co-development and/or coordination among developers. A 172 with RealAir flight dynamics and A2A systems would also be a win-win for simmers, and maybe better for all concerned.

 

In an odd way, this 172 issue reminds me of my first encounter with A2A (which I think was still called Shockwave at the time). I was (still am) a RealAir fan and had bought their Spitfire. When A2A/Shockwave came out with theirs soon after, it got a lot of praise, probably deserved, but I was feeling loyal to RealAir and avoided it. It took me a while to go over to A2A and become a fan of their work (as the banner below indicates). And here we are again. Being more knowledgeable about both companies, I'll likely buy both 172's. But most won't. And if I'm feeling strapped at the point of release, I might decide to draw a clean line and go with RealAir for the 172 and A2A for the Cherokee. Not my favorite outcome but a way of being loyal to both. On the other hand, there's the impact on sales again... This is not easy...

I understand exactly what you are saying but it's because we have different developers that we are not paying outrageous prices and we are getting a plethora of different aircraft designs and innovations. There's always a niche that even a new developer can fill. Competition breeds innovations. The good ones will survive.

 

Carenado has set the bar in exterior and interior graphics for GA aircraft. A2A and RealAir have done the same with their flight dynamics. PMDG has covered both grounds for commercial jets. They created a standard that the other developers must at the very least come close to, if not surpass. There is also the fact that while many flight simmers demand the most minute details, there are many others that prefer the "light" version instead. Another niche made available.

 

As far as the Cessna 172 projects go, I'm glad to see that we will have options available. I don't see either one suffering financially because of the timing of their releases. While many of us may end up with both, the fact that many others will select only "one" means that each developer has to make sure that they provide the best product they possibly can and priced affordably. That helps not only us but them as well. If the product is really good, many will purchase their next product immediately, based on their experience with this one. (The opposite is also true...)
