Is it worth it ? [Question about Overclocking]

Hello everyone,

 

I'm currently running on i7-960 @ 4.00 Ghz.. My FSX settings are somewhere moderate:

 

LOD Radius: Large

Mesh Complexity: 69

Mesh Resolution: 5m

Tex. Resolution: 30cm

Water effects: High 2X

 

Scenery Complex. Very dense

Autogen density: Dense

 

And with these settings i have 16-25 FPS with NGX on Cairns from ORBX, also same FPS on KPHX.

 

Should i overclock more, risk stability until 4.2 ? Will it give extra 3-4 FPS so i can use NGX almost smooth ?

 

PS: I also dont understand how youtube people have extreme smooth flight with NGX, looks like 60 FPS or something on extreme sceneries..

 

 

The system BTW:

 

i7 960 @ 4.00

12 GB Ram @ 1260

MSI GTX 570 TW III

Corsair GT 120 GB SSD as OS

1.5 TB HDD ( separated to 3 parts, one is only for FSX)

750W PSU

Gigabyte X58A UD5 MoBo

the 960 should be able to see 4.2 easy enough, Alvarez - on air, and will likely give you between 4.4 and 4.5on water. This is where I had to stop with the 950 - at 4.48: just couldn't get that extra point or two, to hit 4.5gig. It made life better, for sure, but there was always a compromise, weather, AI, road traffic, water, just plain high detail. It wasn't until I got a 2600K and a 580 that the sim took off, and now Steve Parsons found the fix for DX10 - it's bliss:- Some folks have picked up 20 fps..., but most limit the sim to 30, and then crank everything.

Perhaps a RAM upgrade might help...you have fairly slow RAM by today's standards. DDR3-1600 isn't that expensive anymore. Overclocks work (With adequate cooling), but will only shorten your processor's life.

Agree with Paul. Most computers will run FSX at 30 smoothly at 3.7 GH and above. Anything above 4.0 GH will not add mich frames but help eliminate stutters.

I saw the thread couple of days ago but i'm flying on ORBX sceneries generally, and buildings' textures are missing on night, dusk and dawn with DX10

I have Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz, but i'm not using them since there's not much difference in FPS and texture loading.. Or usually there's a difference and i didn't notice perhaps ?

Alvarez - are they C8 or C9? I run Vengeance at C8 - 1T, and they're solid, and I can tell the difference between C9/C8 and 1 or 2T. I had OCZ Platinum (which threw up errors using memtest at boot), and now I think the Corsair is better - perhaps I trust them more....

 

Me, too - 99.99% Orbx, plus a couple of FlyTampa and a couple of conversions. I rarely fly at night - dusk, sometimes, Alvarez, so I can't speak to your comment, however the only Orbx "Problem" product(s) I've seen during the day are CEN4 (long grass 'blocky') and CEJ4 (long grass & 8 grey GA aircraft). Nothing else thus far. Night is something I should look at...

I have never Overclock my Processor . I have a new one I7 extreme but i haven't use it for fsx yet an it is very expensive so i don't think i will risk overclocking that . But as far as the one i have listed in my spec's , well now that you mention it mmmm i might try overclocking it since i have the I7 extreme in case something goes wrong. Am new also to overclocking like i said before i have never done it . Because i only run FSX in this desktop an no other program or nothing . So i have never found the need to overclock my Processor . It runs pretty nice an smooth with factory setting . All i can suggest you is that if your sim is stable as how it is right now, don't do nothing else to it. Try Word Not Allowed's Guide for tweaking tips on how to get a little more FPS. Am sure he has something talking about FPS .

I applied Word Not Allowed's guide, however FPS dropped more, so i switched back to venetubo site tweak, and added/adjusted couple of things inside.

 

I also changed rams to 1600Mhz Corsair Vengeance C9, 2T

 

And more overclock, running 4.2 Ghz now. I gained 3-4 FPS on QualityWings 757, which is flyable now on 26-30 FPS (cant pass 30 since it's locked on nvidia inspector)

 

But JS4100,and 737 NGX, i have 16-22 FPS still, which there's no changing..
