Are you using the ATC in X-Plane10?

Recommended Posts

I suppose I'll just temper Jcomms enthusiasm a bit.

:-) Impossible.... I'm X-planized... fully!!!! But! I would be the last person to say to anyone - give up on FSX, or P3D! If you, as a RL pilot, feel that FSX is good, then I have to accept it certainly is good! And I acknowledge many positive aspects of using that platform, although I have finally learned that X-Plane (10) is the best option for me because:

- I haven't invested that much in FSX (just a few add-ons)

- X-Plane10 offers me good environment and a nice glider model to fly around in places I know from RL without having to spend more money in glider or weather tweaking/injector add-ons

- Having just a couple of times had the chance to get my hands on an helicopter ( A Schweizer 300 and an R-44 ), I memorized it for the rest of my life, and back then I was using fs9 and DODOSim 206, then migrated to FSX, and finally experimented the feel of X-Plane9, and now X-Plane10 - it simply can't be compared... It's a LOT more what I recall having experienced...

- Last, but certainly not least, there is a sensation when flying, fluidly, in X-Plane10 with the immersive environment that makes me really like this sim... Of course the excellent add-ons I have for it also helped a lot, but some of the default aircraft are already very nice!

I thought this thread was about the X-Plane ATC???

My answer to that is, I'm trying to use it, but it won't let me. I wasn't able to finalize a single flight with ATC (esp. approach is a pain), often I'm stuck even before I get a clearance for take-off. If I turn on some AI it's even worse, AIs have go arounds all the time while I'm stuck with "hold short...", taxiing of AI is often more than crazy...etc.

It's for sure a complex system/task but as it is now it's simply superfluous. And I doubt that this is something that will be fixed anytime soon. It's a pity.

Confirmed... Definitely ATC is not THE FEATURE in X-Plane10... I have also given up playing around with it...

I've made a few flights, but I just filled the FPL already airborne - those taxi instruction drived me NUTS!

My oppinion:

- Either address it in a future patch or....

- Open the code for 3pd to get in and offer ATC plugins....

[EDIT:]

Even without a major overhaul I believe it could get better if:

- Taxi instructions were made even more basic, but at least not so weird like what I get for instance at LPPT, where I'm constantly told to taxy and backtrack through the rws... A simple "taxi to and hold rw ..." leaving the path to the pilot's discretion while a better "afcad" is not available fo X-Plane10...

- A less impetuous controller, constantly repeating the level and heading changes while you're progressing in your flight and trying to comply... Sometimes it takes a few more seconds... The guy really irritates me the way it is now...

- Vectoring for IFR approaches, at least when weather is IMC... Having an IAF for the rws wold be great...

I actually like it better in X-Plane10 when I do not get constant handing of communications as I cross aerodromes bellow me while cruising and being handled by some Center...

At this point, I'd be happy with just Flight Following so you can get chatter, but not the constant repetition of the instruction given only seconds before. More voices would be nice too.

Maybe others have a different priority list for flying.

1- Operating the aircraft.

2- Communication.

Looking back throught the beta releases, I don't recall seeing much work on the ATC engine. I'd say the X-Plane ATC engine needs some developer time

Airport Ai is also strange and seems to be task/processor dependent. I have tried the experiment of turning graphics features on to near max and then setting the sim to "AI Flys Plane" then watched the plane pretty much wander around semi-drunkenly for an interminable amount of time before final takeoff.

Turn the sim to lowest graphics, and the plane races right to the end of the runway like a pro and soars into the sky.

Interesting finding! I have my AI set to 0 aircraft (only 1 aircraft - mine, in the simulation, like in MS FLIGHT when not online :-)) I'll have to check that one :-)

This is the player (Ga) aircraft behaving like this. I learned early to leave the other AI craft off, so I have no idea if this applies to the "Big Metal"

I am an avid FSX user, but there are a lot of attractive aspects about X-Plane 10 and the more that I use it and get comfortable with it, the more I like it. I will be starting to buy more scenery and airports for it to make the environment look better as I get even more comfortable with it.

For now, I'm not using ATC in X-Plane 10. If I want ATC, I'm flying online using the IVAO ATC network. But I hope they'll improve their X-IvAp pilot client.

No one on the LR team have said ATC will not be improved. They are very receptive to customer feedback, and there have been calls for an improved ATC system.

Actually Austin himself said as much when asked in the AVSIM team speak conference. He stated he didn't see anything wrong with it and added he thought "It Rocked" He also outlined the development plan for the next 2 years, in which he termed other then the GUI and implementation of 64Bit, changes would be relatively minor, and ATC/AI was not one of the changes mentioned.

He also said, as recently as early last year, he never had any plans to change the UI...but he did.

He does listen to his customers. As long as it's a majority vote.

I flew a good flight for my VA today, choosing a Horizon Air flight from KBOI to KSEA. This was to be my first full trip using the XP10 dreaded ATC.

Getting airborne was no hassle and I was vectored on a 360 heading which I obediently followed. Then 2 mins later "You are off course".

I immediately changed heading to get me back on the flight plan FMS track. "You are off course".

Okay, I thought if I can just get past my 1st waypoint this psychological harassment should stop. "You are off..."

Oh **** this, so I flew the rest of the way without ATC.

I can understand that this is WIP but if they could squash this "off course" bug now, at least ATC would be sort-of usable!

i have to admit that the ATC in XP10 is a major step up from XP9 and previous versions, and I use it on all my flights. However, in approach, i'm going missing. Last week, i flew an approach into Vienna (LOWW) and the ATC told me to fly heading 130, until intercepting with RWY34's approach. Then however, it forgot about me and i kept flying until i was over the Balaton Lake (roughly 150nm south east of Vienna). Any attempts to fly back to Vienna (FUEL!) were met with the constant 'you are off course' status from the ATC. I really like the ATC feature, and i will continue using it, but for most approaches, it is better to fly with no ATC coverage, at least in the approach.

FSX has a similar issue with ATC and "off course."  In FSX, if you aren't locked on with the autopilot and GPS, and you get a wind drift, it will vector you back and forth across the flightpath like a fish, making too much heading change, then overcompensating the other direction.  I used to calculate the approximate drift and then ignore the assigned heading change and just fly what kept me on course.

To be honest, I have not tried XP10 ATC yet.

For those who are talking about "no airports", be sure to check out  http://x-plane.cleverest.eu/ . There is a good supply of nicely built airports here for free that only require "unzipping" (just one click in windows) and placing the result in your "Custom Scenery" folder.  This is a growing database and is a great asset for users of XPX.  No - it won't help ATC, but I find the window generated in FSX to take away from the experience as much, or more, as the lack of ATC in XPX.

Just my two cents worth!

Hi John,

Thanks for sharing this. Quick question, when I go to the site, it brings me to a map. If i click on one of the airports, then hit download, It redirects to the gateway x-plane page and then says, scenery not found???  It happened on several airports so far. Below is one of them I tried... Do you know which airports are available and which are not? Thanks in advance. :-)

Best, Jeff

Hmm, maybe the gateway was down when you tried? I can see that scenery just fine. I used the link from the map and also went there directly. It shows a 2D scenery added by the WEDbot. Hopefully you can grab it by trying again.

It worked for me too.  If you didn't, try typing Peter O Knight into the search block and try it that way.  You should get an image of the airport when you click the "pin" and then, when you click on download in that box, you should be taken to another screen from which you choose "download". Sorry if I'm getting too basic here, but sometimes it is easy to overlook the obvious --- but then, I am old. :blush2:

Hi

Ive found a great answer for xplane atc,

Pilot2atc runs great, it has loads of extras and you can get a demo to try it for free

www.pilot2atc.com

I use it in xplane all the time, ifr and vfr

And its very realistic

Have all the other sims but xplane gives the best smooth frame rates and real feeling of flying

Having said that just bought fsx se its nearly as smooth, so im using my fsx addons again

All the best

Mhazy

Ps I am nothing to do with pilot2atc, but it works great with fsx, prepar2, and xplane so thats why I bought it

The native ATC, in my opinion, is severely lacking. It only works for IFR and then, it's a bit "iffy" much of the time. Because I have not yet found any good addon/plugin atc programs for x-plane that will also handle VFR flights, I'm sort of not using atc at all right now.
