Strange occurrence in W7 64 Pro

On boot up the machine displays in excess of 2000 fragments even though it was Defragged at closedown. If this is ignored and the machine rebooted the fragments increase to in excess of 4000. (Using Diskeeper)

 

Not aware of any processes running in the background. A Laptop running the same OS does not display this oddity.

 

Would be glad to hear from anyone with ideas and or suggestions as to what may be going on in the background. Thanks.

There must be a switch or setting in Diskkeeper that is causing this. You won't get this type of error/info with the default defrag program. You can check what processes are running by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del on the keyboard. Whenever Windows 7 is turned on there are many, many processes running in the background "silently". Not sure what you mean by 'defragged at closedown'. You have a setting in Diskkeeper that automatically defrags the HDD when you click on the Shutdown button, defrags then shutsdown? I would do a defrag at least once a month and while Windows 7 is running. If you do it regularly, it won't take long to defrag. Is Diskkeeper better than the defrag program that came with Windows 7?

Hi Jim, Diskeeper is quicker than the Win Defrag that is all, plus it gives a visual representation. Have used it for over ten years now.

 

I have Auto Defrag turned off, only use it in manual mode & on a daily basis for the system drive, prior to shutdown. Only discovered this oddity when after booting one day, I ran the "analyse" utility within Diskeeper, looking for some information. Machine is virus free and Indexing is turned off both of which could be a cause.

 

Have aquired a copy of Process Monitor, which can be set to create a Boot Log at the next Boot Up. Will see tomorrow what it can tell me.

Like I said, only discovered this by accident really and the Fragmented files are of "low" performace value.

MMmm very naughty...seems that my Garmin Satnav Map Updater has a mind of its own.

 

Along with ...\$Extend\$UsnJrnl...whatever that is.

Also dual listing of...\System Volume Information\ :Thinking: Seems the machine can't live without any of them.

 

Guess the workaround is to defrag after booting up instead of before shutdown. Ah well, at least I have some inkling of what is going on under the hood.

To me the question is why in the world do you feel the need to defrag that often? It serves no other purpose than to wear out your drive. Unless you are into moving some huge data files around frequently, it's a waste. Once a month is more than adequate. However, we all do what makes US feel comfortable.

@ vgbaron...machine is used for video capture & editing primary usage.

I only degrag twice a year. Once in the summer and once around Xmas when I have time to watch grass grow.

 

On another note,

You should set your Min and Max pagefile size even if it doesn't get accessed that much to the same size so it doesn't fragment as much.
