September 4, 201213 yr Moderator I think there are many reasons for the way people carry on on internet forums. I always think it strange to see people post heat of the moment posts on forums, and all I can think to myself is that, you've have 5 mins to think through your answer, yet you still chose to say that? It's not like real life where if you spend 5 mins trying to come up with a response, people would get no where, all you have there is 5 seconds, so heat of the moment posts are more understandable. Ró, I think back on the old days where most communications were filtered via BBS networks such as RIME, Intelec, FIDO and so forth, where quite often one would have hours (sometimes days) for formulate one's reply... Even when I owned and operated my own BBS (CANDLE Abbey and CANDLEnet), I still composed all of my replies in my message client and uploaded once per day just like any other user. This allowed me to re-read my replies several times before uploading and distributing to the world at large. More than once I either deleted a reply entirely, or else spent additional time editing my reply prior to submission. For whatever it's worth, this is something that modern day forums do not allow. In many ways, today's forums are a reversion to the really ancient BBS prior to the development of mail clients, where folks could only log in, and type their replies directly to the BBS's "forums." Yes, most web forums do allow one to "Edit" their submission, but unless one is really, really quick, at least one person will have already read one's imprudent reply! Fr. September 4, 201213 yr Judging by the quality of the spelling and grammar in many forum posts, it is obvious that most are made without a second thought before pressing the post button. even now as I type this on my phone, I will check it over, and maybe even delete the message altogether if I find that I am not going to add something to the thread. In this case, I am not saying anything that hasn't already been said, but I will post anyway to agree. I find that some people live to take jabs at others behind the net. Others could avoid stirring conflict if they took the time to address others more respectfully. Then there are those who feel everyone is out to get them... I love this site http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/ it sums up all the usual forum players very nicely.
September 4, 201213 yr I've always thought that there is an ulterior agenda with those people that flame up forums and we never got to see their true purpose. Just do not bite their baits. To be ignored really drives them mad. Cheers, MAB
September 4, 201213 yr I love this site http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/ it sums up all the usual forum players very nicely. Great link you've got there, just going through each one and for pretty much the majority I've got different users on here in mind. Amazing how pretty much all of us can be put into one or more of those groups, and how many of those groups are not actually positive useful groups. Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
