12 Million Apple ID Codes hacked from FBI

Recommended Posts

The biggest question one must ask of course is WHY and HOW did the FBI come about this information?

http://www.dailymail...-taken-FBI.html

Any suggestions from conspiricy theorists and humourist welcome.

1. They got the info from the illegal raid of Kim Dotcom

2. The users are all mates of Kim Dotcom

3. Kim Dotcom planted it on the FBI laptop as the officer downloaded a pirated movie :P .... and my favourite

4. Big Brother is watching you AND listening to your music

Its a pretty safe bet that the big companies (in cooperation with the government) are putting backdoors in pretty much everything, likely with a gag orders not to talk about it under any one of a zillion (and counting) "National security" orders.

Which is why if I was a foreign country I would not use anything touched by America on a bet. "Red Flag Linux" was the Chinese governments choice of OS until Microsoft made some major concessions on the source code, and I would not trust any big American corporation very much further than that.

FBI denies link to leak of 12 million Apple codes

The FBI says there is "no evidence" that a hacker group gained access to 12 million identifying codes for Apple devices via an FBI agent's laptop.

AntiSec, a hacker group, posted a file on the internet on Monday that it said contained more than one million of Apple's so-called UDID codes.

UDIDs are a 40-character string unique to each Apple device.

AntiSec said it gained the codes from the laptop of an FBI agent called Christopher Stangl.

Mr Stangl works in the bureau's Regional Cyber Action Team, Wired Magazine reports.

AntiSec suggested that the 12 million codes were being used by the FBI to track the associated users.

Along with the posted file, the group said in a statement that it had only released one million IDs and had scrubbed identifying information, including full names, telephone numbers and addresses.

Commenting on the AntiSec revelation, the FBI said it had no indication of any link to its agent or computer.

"At this time there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data," the bureau said in a statement on Tuesday.

Peter Kruse, an e-crime specialist with CSIS Security Group in Denmark, tweeted on Tuesday that the leak "is real" and that he confirmed three of his own devices in the data.

Johannes Ullrich of the SANS Internet Storm Center told the AFP that while "there is nothing else in the file that would implicate the FBI... it is not clear who would have a file like this".

Hackers identifying themselves with AntiSec have made previous hits this year on the websites of Panda Labs' anti-malware products and New York Ironwork - a company that sells equipment to US police.

  Of course they are going to deny any link

And there will not be any evidence whatsoever - that's long gone, regardless of which agency or company it really came from.

Now putting a bit of humour back into it maybe it came from a family Trust set up by George Orwell

It seemed for a while there that every week somebody was losing a laptop with a couple of million whatevers on them that the person in question usually was not supposed to have access to outside of work.

How many times does this stuff have to happen before somebody puts their foot down and asks the obvious question of "Hey! Why are you numbknuts even still wandering the streets with this crap on you after the last ten times this happened!?"

The real question is, would anyone be surprised if its true?

Being a Kiwi that has watched the Kim Dotcom fiasco, the blatant disregard of international law shown by the US (and many more pertaining to nuclear disarmament), I would have to be honest and say that I would NOT be surprised if it WAS true. BUT that alone, does not make it so. That is my honest opinion based on actual and perceived events that affect me, my family and my country.

Meh. Who knows what goes on with our credit card information online. My posts right here might be being read as I type...

This has been happening for years, yet people accept it for what it is. How many years do we have to go until our combined generations turn around and say "enough is enough ... slackness is not an excuse?"

Now going back to the humorous side of things (or are people too scared to laugh at life?) ...

"That's how they found Bin Laden - They nobbled his Apple Angry Bird Account !".

It is an interesting find but I don't make out too much from it. I don't believe it is anything to do with Kim Dotcom. They probably are investigating piracy and this seems to be a domestic operation.

The way Itunes works it wouldn't be hard for them to know what is legit and what is not in your Itunes library if they could access it, especially if you use Genuis. So no surprise they are investigating users. most likely going after the high profile cases. I see this as a domestic FBI operation.

Hi Matthew,

You've obviously not been in NZ long enough to read the humour in my comments - perhaps I should have put only the word "humourists" in bold?

But welcome to NZ and I really hope you enjoy your time here.

Regardless of whether it is domestic or not - the fact remains that 12,000,000 "PRIVATE" ID's have been captured.

I have the utmost faith that our kids will start to stand up to this. Unfortunately my son is only seven and my US Visa will have been long reascended by then. :O

LOL - I wouldn't put it that way, just that the Internet is extremely Tunnel Vision as when two people talk with each other they read body language, over the internet is like comunicating through a tiny world pipe.

Thanks for the welcome and New Zealand is home now. I came here in 2006 and loved it, so I came back 2 years ago with a permanent residency so you guys have me for good now...LOL

In 3 years I will definitely be going for my Citizenship so that will make me Canadian/Kiwi.....No more on the US citizenship even though that is my background but to keep it means you have to file Tax Returns to the IRS every year regardless of where in the world you live. Which means when I sell the house I own in New Zealand I have to pay the IRS on that capital gain, or if I win a Lottery in New Zealand I have to pay the IRS the tax on those winnings, also pay tax on my business in New Zealand.....Crazy huh, no other country in the world quite like that. LOL

I don't stand up to the USA as I love the USA. I am directly descended from Zachary Taylor, the 12 President of those United States and very proud of my US Heritage. I only criticize the USA in areas where I think it can do better. That way I keep it as constructive as possible as I will always believe in the USA.

It has been a blast mixing it up with you here so far and I look forward to more online chatter....I just honetly believe that people need to make it back to the USA to see what is really going on there at the moment. It is not what you see/read/hear on TV/Internet/Media etc etc etc.

Cheers

Good God ... does greed (sorry, can't say greed - I mean US taxation) know no bounds? I am stunned and my wife is even more stunned.

Even us Kiwis don't have to pay tax on the lottery!

I really do feel sorry for you and without getting into an argument with those US citizens reading this, I can only say that some cultural capitalism rules really do suck !!

(And there's me complaining about my provisional business taxes last week)

Again - welcome. Cheers DB

Matthew - adding to your earlier comments about taxation on overseas commercial earnings. It really does explain why the US is trying to gain commercial control of the internet through international trade agreements. Good grief - but this is a topic for another thread.

Most countries in the world don't pay tax on lottery winnings...LOL

Even crazier. If you are an American living in New Zealand and you won the lottery, gave up your citizenship before claiming the winnings you would still have to pay tax on it. I can't remember the timeline but the IRS still wants you to file tax returns for a period after you give up citizenship even if you are abroad.

Commonwealth nations never did that as you are free to move around the Commonwealth and have no obligations when you leave a nation. In Canada, pay tax in Canada....Leave Canada and move to New Zealand, Pay tax in New Zealand, Leave New Zealand and go to the UK....pay tax in UK.....just pay where your butt is parked is all. This one is the better system.

Cheers

Having read further into this it seems more likely this is about Mobile App piracy then movies or music.

Matthew,

Legalised theft without a doubt.! Win $5Million of (NZ) taxpayers money and grab half of it to pay (US) taxpayers outstanding debt ????

Tell you what. Lets start a new thread entitled "Legalised theft - is it worth it?". If the majority of US responses believe that, that is fair and reasonable, I will shout you lunch and more than a couple of drinks at Shed 5 on the waterfront. How does that sound? Now going back to a little humour -

US Internal Revenue Service gets hacked - Apple loses details of those who could potentially own an i-phone.
