Failed FSX SSD drive. What must I do now ?

Recommended Posts

I might point out that I have now got my replacement SSD and copied over my backed up FSX. Things seem to work. PMDG 737NGX loads without error messages like FSX itself. But of course problem can surface later.

Looks like SSD's are much less reliable than HDD. I got one, and it failed while copying 60 gig of FSX folder to it.

I never tried to purchase another SSD since, went raptor instead.

On the point of fsx on system drive or not, i support fsx on its drive cause

1. Backup is easier, upgrading fsx drive etc

2. Looking at win7 perf monitor recently whilst tracking cause of fps dips.

The only thing blowing through the roof of perf mon graphs was disk access.

In particular fsx drive with fsgx and system drive too was very busy.

Had spare 1T samsung storage drive, moved all its storage to ext HDD, then made it FSXG+REX+AS2012+rc4

Moving those to new drive, making 3 drives system/fsx/addons.

Now in perf mon system and FSX drives are still very busy , but max out much less.

this together with Word Not Allowed's up to date and simple tweak guide is currently looking very smooth, but early testing so far.

The point is, while cruising and checking win7 perf mon, of all the varibales, CPU,Network,Disk,Memory, Disk was the only variable bursting the charts, hnece the reason for spreading the load to third drive.

So i think the smoothest fps approach is

1. System drive, with very little else that could be active when fsx is on

2. FSX drive, nothing else...(my raptor often cant keepup with access to scenery folder in FSX alone)

never mind when i had FSGlobal 2010 installed on same drive.

3 Drive for FSX addons AS2012, rc4, rex (rc4 too can be quite a HDD hug but only for breif periods, but heavy)
