Is X-Plane9 still worth the buy?

Recommended Posts

Question is... While v10 does not get stable, and most add-ons still get released for v9, and also given that apparently (as I was told) 9.70 was a great release, I wonder what might be the advantages of having it?

What are the main differences between the two, given FD, World/Scenery coverage and Weather?

I know it can still be bought by a marginal value....

Main Simulation Rig:

I have the disks somewhere but always get mega-fog on a fairly modern machine.

Never figured that one out!

Haven't tried XP9.7 in a long time. Just had to go back to it now when I got the 777. Man.. gotta tell you it is CRAZY smooth for me compared to XPX. I am developing a slight crush on it as a matter of fact...

Isn't the demo still around?

I'm still on 9.7 and one of the things I love about it is that, the smooooothness and it is also amazingly stable, I have never had a CTD since I installed it and believe me its been a while.

I met the Laminar guys at Oshkosh and bought X-Plane 9 on an impulse. Installed it, never liked it mainly because of the IMO bad - or should I probably say different - interface, and finally uninstalled it. My main reason was that I just couldn't get TrackIR to work properly which to me is a death sentence. Perhaps I should give it another chance!

I have been plagued by shimmering in XPX also which isn't an issue what so ever for me in v9. I will probably be using v9 more after this...

On my setup HDR causes the shimmering. Looks like summer heat waves all the time. With HDR of, it is hardly noticeable Thats the real reason I don't use HDR..

Actually I think this behaviour is quite strange for me. It's like sometimes it's under control and the next time it isn't. I think it has something to do with the time of day. It seems like the issue is stronger during mid-day and less pronounced during early mornings and dusk. I don't think I see a significant difference with HDR either on or off. I kind of suspect my graphics card also (maybe subconsciously trying to persuade myself to buy a GF680.. :P ).

Well.. regarding XP9.7... I've had some more time playing around with it. It is actually really good. I forgot about how good it could be. I have everything tuned up and the 777 performs like a dream. Using these settings it actually looks better then XPX for me. And with no shimmering as icing on the cake.

EDIT: One thing drives me nuts about 9.7 though. I hate controlling the throttle with the mouse wheel.

I. Want. To. Zoom. With. The. Mouse. Wheel. Geez.
