Using WOAI for commercial traffic, any suggestions for adding GA traffic?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm all set with airline traffic, but since I fly mostly VFR, I'd like to see some C172's, Learjets, Gulfstreams, etc puttering around my skies as well.

Preferably freeware, by the way. I bought UT2 and although I like it, I prefer to use WOAI. No more payware traffic for me B)

I know there are some FS9 packages and I don't mind converting them to FSX format, but what do you guys recommend using?

Thanks,

GG

I'm a noob at this, so probably not the best solution, but I used the GA-Traffic program here: http://library.avsim...util&DLID=97262

Before running GA Traffic, you will want to install some GA AI models. There are some in the AVSIM library, most seem to be for FS9, for example there are models by Klaus Brosemann. There are also the HTAI community models by Dee Waldron. I'm thinking of getting the payware Cessna package on the HTAI Models site, it's only $9.95. Look here: http://htai-models.c...ects/index.html and here: http://htai-models.com/index.html.

There are some WOAI GA packages as well, and I think GA-Traffic can use those models too, although I haven't tried that yet.

Once you have your AI models, run GA Traffic, set the slider for the amount of traffic you want. Then go to the airplanes tab and uncheck "Use for GA" on any airplane you don't want to use (eg. default and payware airplanes). I leave only my AI models selected. Then have it collect all the airports in your database and finally tell it to generate the flight plan. The version I linked to generates FSX flight plans. Make sure you have converted your WOAI flight plans to FSX (I use AIFP).

I'm quite pleased with the results, some of the planes are not much to look at but I have lots of planes flying around and good frame rates.

How do you convert the FS9 models to FSX? I have converted some prop textures but that's about it. I heard that Addon Converter X is good for that.

I am also looking for general aviation traffic.

As far as I understand installing WOAI automatically gets rid of default AI traffic. Or is it possible to keep the default GA traffic somehow?

WOAI installs FS9 traffic files. If you have even 1 FS9 traffic file then all FSX traffic files are disabled, including any boat traffic. To get this FSX traffic back you can use AI Flight Planner (AIFP) to convert the FS9 schedules to FSX. If you only wanted the default FSX GA traffic and not airlines then you might be able to use AIFP to edit the trafficAircraft.bgl file to remove all airline traffic and only keep the GA (make a backup first).

Alternatively a simpler solution might be to grab the GA traffic files here: http://www.flightsim...A/Def_GA_DL.htm. These appear to be FS9 schedules so they will work with WOAI without needing to convert the WOAI schedules to FSX. The only thing you would not have is the boat traffic.

I let this run but it created one single 240MB traffic file and I'm a little afraid of performance drop. And I couldn't even see a lot of traffic.

That last link is really awesome. Just copy the 8 bgls and the traffic is there. To switch it off you just need to rename or move these files before starting FSX.

Thanks!

That's entirely misleading. I use WoAI FSX traffic exclusively and both road and ship traffic appear as normal.

This is similar to WoAI and is good for bizjets and bizprops

Sorry if what I posted was misleading. Installing FS9 traffic files does not affect auto-generated traffic including freeway traffic and some of your boats. However it does disable FSX traffic which uses flight plans which include your aircraft traffic and certain boat traffic.

For reference, see here: http://stuff4fs.com/newpage.asp?folder=AIFP&function=be-aware and here: http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15191, particularly Jim Vile's post.

I also use the WOAI GA packages which seem to use some of the ultimate GA stuff: http://www.world-of-ai.com/allpackages.php#ga

What you can do is use a freeware called "AI Flight Planner" that have the ability to convert FS9 traffic Files to FSX traffic files.

it's easy : you point to your FSX directory and ask him to convert FS9 traffic files to FSX ones. If you choose the option to then delete converted FS9 files you're ok with all WOAI traffic.

It takes like 2 minutes and do not request any sfecific skills !

EDIT ; sorry didn't see you mention this option Barry, by the way thank you for the info on GA-Traffic program, looks like a good one.

So the answer is NOT to use any FS9 files in FSX - and there's no need to. All WoAI files come in separate FS9 and FSX formats.......

Are you sure about that? I'm almost certain that although the WOAI installer may be compatible with FSX, the packages themselves are all in FS9 format.

I've had to convert every WOAI flightplan to FSX using AIFP in order to keep the default GA, boat, and bird traffic working together in FSX.

------------

By the way, thanks for the tips everyone.

What I am sure of is that I haven't noticed any problem with anything disappearing...... apart from €40.
