Possible workaround for lack of replay w/777

Featured Replies

I'm still fiddling around with it, but Sandy Barbour made a flight data recorder plugin for X-Plane about 9 years ago that still seems to work for the most part in XPX, including with the 777. Unlike the default XPX replay feature, you can change the weather and time of day, since the plugin just records the flight information itself and not the state of the sim as a whole. There's some stuttering present, but I'm wondering if that can be fixed by recording the flight data with barebones graphics settings and then replaying with something more presentable. More testing is needed.

This was more of a curiosity thing with me, as I'm not really a video creator of any merit. Others may have an interest. You can find the plugin here: http://www.xpluginsdk.org/flight_data_recorder.htm

Extract to your X-Plane 10\Resources\plugins folder and then create a new folder therein called "flightdataviewer"

In X-Plane, select the FlightDataRecorder plugin and Run. Click "Create File" and name it whatever, then Ok. The Record button will activate. Hit record and do your flying. When done, hit Stop. To view the file, close the FlightDataRecorder window, then select and run the FlightDataViewer plugin. Open File, then select the your saved file, and then use the play controls.

Thanks to Sandy for this great little utility!

I made a quick video showing a replay. It doesn't show a whole lot and the resolution is crap, but this is in fact a replay of a recorded segment of flight with the 777. The window is the FlightDataViewer plugin, and you can slide it off screen so it doesn't show in the recording.

Hi Jon,

I believe that Philipp has acknowledged that they will bring back the replay feature in the upcoming patch. If they don't, then I can see this solution as a workaround.

thanks

He did say that, but there was something about it only being from the outside. I'm sure that'll satisfy most people, since many just want to be able to see their perfect landings as a spectator (myself included!). I like this plugin because it does away with the X-Plane replay controls on the screen, and allows you to see those landings at different times of the day. There's been many times when I've nailed my approach beautifully, only it was dark and the only thing I could see in the replay was a set of blinking lights. So in that respect, I think this plugin is great for all replay scenarios. It just so happens to work with the 777 as well.
