Poor performance with the GTX670 and NGX?

Featured Replies

Im running 64bit Windows 7, FSX on the same hard drive as the OS (Intel 330 180GB SSD)

Driver version is 301.42.

And the low FPS is something that bothers me much, and that i notice constantly. So much it makes me feel like something is very wrong ... :(

I will give you screens of my sliders asap, dough changing them doesn't change much.

Just one thing:

When running FSX, one of my CPUs 4 cores is constantly on 100%, while the others show about 10-20 percent on the graph. Can this be the cause of my problems or is it FSX's age that makes it this way on modern CPUs?

Hey Alex, take a look at my system specs and then... Bloom unticked, shadows on the ground unticked, aircraft casts shadow on itself unticked, cloud draw distance and coverage low, water setting at med x2 (unless problems with a Bufferpools tweak, in which case this may have to be increased) vehicles on ground no more than 10%, boats 0%, airport vehicles 0%, GA AI set to 0% when flying tubes and airline set to no more than 25% (less if not using 3rd party AI) when flying GA set airline to 0% and GA to 25% (less if not using 3rd party AI) I would respectfull disagree with Zach about the AG density as this should be a flexible setting dependent upon the kind of scenery and kind of aircraft you are using. eg, if I am flying the NGX over Europe with GEX and UTX into an Aerosoft airport then I need to have the AG density at normal. However, if I am flying a GA in Orbx's New Zealand scenery then I can often have the AG slider at very dense when flying the Realair Legacy or in a not so demanding aircraft like the A2A Cub I can fly at Maximum settings. I can also increase the LOD value too!

As for... one of my CPUs 4 cores is constantly on 100%, while the others show about 10-20 percent on the graph I will let someone else reply to this as it may have something to do with the way the Ivy Bridge uses it's cores which I am unfamiliar with. I would also ask anyone else here about the Affinity Mask tweak, which relates directly to the CPU core usage.

Anyway, keep us informed.

Word Not Allowed's guide sets the affinity mask to 14. That put's the operating system on the first core (core 0) and the rest of the load on the other cores. FSX is running on the core you see at 100%. Affinity mask setting keeps the OS and FSX from being assigned to the same core.

One of the big confusions I had when setting up the cfg file, was finding the settings recommended in the guide. It turns out, many of the recommended settings are not in the fsx.cfg file. You have to manually type them in to the specified group using notepad. hooda thunk?

I've been thinking about things Alex and to be honest, although you have the latest CPU and hi end GPU, you are still running at 3.4Ghz (?) Considering FSX is CPU bound, as I said earlier, the GPU you have will make virtually no difference on frames over say a GTX 470. With no overclock, no cfg tweaks and maybe some over zealous slider settings used in conjunction with the NGX then I don't think your results are too off the mark. In my experience, overclocking the CPU to about 4.5ghz, combined with the bufferpools tweak could give you an increase of about 30-40% in performance.

I absolutely agree Robert. I think anyone wanting to get their machine up to the correct running configuration needs to follow it to the letter. But of course, it's a little like a car, it's no use tuning the engine until everything else is absolutely A1. So Word Not Allowed's guide does just that. It ensures, if followed correctly, that FSX will run as efficiently as possible, beyond which it is necessary to overclock to get the best possible performance in FSX from today's addons

Hi again, and thanks a lot for all the replies and effort you have put in giving me answers, its very much appreciated! ^_^

Iv'e set up FSX with Kostas guide now, all tweaks in fsx.cfg and settings in Nvidia Inspector and FSX, but nothing much is changed. But i'm installing the Corsair H100 tonight, target clock speed is 4,5 GHZ so i will see if things improve then, and report back!

Well Alex, 4.5ghz is a good point to aim for and I'd be surprised if you couldn't get to that with ease with liquid cooling. Keep us all informed...

hi alex, to increase your fps you might want to consider ovreclocking your cpu to 4.5ghz ( as long as you have a good heat sink fan) and to overclcok your graphic card(s).

Thomas Wills

If you have an Asus board with turbo evo, 4.5 GHz is a couple of clicks away. Just adjust your Vcore to about 1.25, set cores as a group, 45 multiplier, and apply ... it really is that simple. Other major motherboard mfgs have similar setups. If your Mobo has a TPU switch, just flip it and the mobo will do everything automatically to 4.3 or 4.4 GHz. The days of spending hours and hours overclocking are over. The industry has adopted the Ron Popeil method ... Set It and Forget It. The H100 is a great purchase, especially when you put the fans in a push/pull configuration. You will never see over 50 C.

As a rule I think it's bad practice to run any intensive software on the same drive as the O/S, even ssd's....best install on a separate drive [not partition].

20 to 30 fps is not that bad, if you were getting 8 fps then that would be worth tears. Are you 'seeing' frames drop during the flight or are you just looking at numbers? - if you are just looking at numbers be aware the human eye will perceive 20 to 30 fps as smooth. If you are stuttering then apply tweaks. Affinity Mask will help spread the CPU load, my guess is that you won't see that much of a difference.

Chris Farrell

I just tested mine at schipol with no addons and its sitting on 30 (capped) my system 3.3ghz and gtx560ti

You need to find what is the root cause and overclocking is not the answer, you dont need it especially at a default airport and no add ons.

If I were you I would post in the main FSX forums and not just PMDG. when you say venetubo you did make the changes to your CFG file right? He automatically provides tweaks but does not change your CFG
