Support for FSX Has Come to an End

Featured Replies

soon we will all be on a different forum...

Nonsense!

If it has wings, rotors or rockets, there will always be those who will generate a computer based data replica of it that others will enjoy developing further and playing with.

All those who do so will find a home right here at Avsim! We've seen multiple platforms come and go, and there will still be plenty more before Avsim even begins to fade.

As the old song goes...

"Oh the games people play now

Every night and every day now..."

Kind regards,

Are the originally purchased FSX CDs "protected" from making a backup copy?

What is the best way to get a usable copy of these CD burned/copied for personal use?

Best Regards,

Vaughan Martell  PP-ASEL KDTW

They'll last long enough.... or long enough for a newer OS to come out that doesn't support FSX. I look at some of my old discs... Descent II, Age of Empires, Total Annihilation - all those games still run fine in my CD drive, it's that Win7 won't run them without serious modification.

Just store your discs in a safe place.

Sour grapes.

Just getting their own back for us not supporting MS Flight.

Just store your discs in a safe place.

Will do.

Actually, it seems to make very little difference, whether MS still provides support for FSX or not, because I've never had to go to them. I'm glad, Avsim still provides support, that's the only thing that counts for me!

Your can backup FSX DVDs (including Acceleration) as ISO files on a hard drive. And installs are MUCH faster when done from a virtual drive using those ISOs.

XP10 has a lot to refine before I even entertain dropping FSX.

This is the first XP that I've ever considered, but it has a long way to go for me personally. I wouldn't be surprised if V11 or 12 hits the spot though.

Greetings all!

Jennifer here, just wanted to jump in to let you know that I am looking into a few questions Tom sent along yesterday after I contacted him regarding the FSX support announcement.

One question specifically was in regards to the FSInsider page and its future.

Currently we have no immediate plans to remove the site, however Tom tells me there is some content there that some people would like to see archived.

Rather than risk this content disappearing Tom had proposed we allow AVSIM to archive the articles here.

I honestly cannot think of a better place. We are more than willing to let AVSIM do so if desired. (Please give credit to authors and site the original source of course.)

I will continue to look into other questions that have arisen and do what I can to get you answers.

Thanks for the information.

I looked for ISO on the internet.

Is this the software needed to get the CDs on a virtual drive .... or backup (burned) CD.

You do not need to make an ISO copy. All that is required is to just copy the files from the two CDs

to two folders...FSX Disc 1 and FSX Disc 2.

I have used that method and installed FSX just fine.

Fascinating.Does it install directly from the disks? FSX Gold? The reason I ask is usually there is some type of encryption on the disk that doesnt allow the installer to work and requires special software to copy/backup. Like ISO. I dont know but suppose you would have to manually find the installer MSI and use it.

Thanks for the follow up.

I will get the master FSX CDs onto my hard drive.

I suppose the hard drive folders "content/files only) could then be copied back to blank DVD disks ... or would it have to be copied in a specific format .. like ISO?

No special format, those would just be backups/copies. Its the installers on the original DVD's you get concerned about or the "bootstraps"

Just to understand:

If the full contents from FSX original CDs are copied to Hard Drive Folders ..ok.

Do you run an installer from the hard drive (folder disk1 .. FSX original disk1 contents) to do the re-install of FSX?
