Hi guys,

 

I'm getting quite close to starting my first build (Few months). Anyway, I've gathered a parts list of everything I think would make for a great rig overall. My question to you is whether everything is compatible, if I will have sufficient cords/plugs, and if I will need to purchase anything else. I plan on doing minimal overclocking, so a Coolermaster addition will have to wait until further down the road. My other question is how well would this combination work with FSX, the NGX, 777 (can't wait :rolleyes:), REX Essentials, and minimal airport scenery addons. I would ideally like to have the majority of the graphics sliders toward the higher end, maybe not totally maxed out but enough to have stunning scenery at 35-40 fps and little lag during poor weather conditions. One thing I do know is that this will be an improvement over a Centrino 2 (2.1Ghz) with 4 GB ram :lol:. Any and all interjection is welcome assuming it is helpful and hopefully comes from folks with similar hardware. The total cost is within budget right now, not including shipping or rebates.

Hi Morgan,

 

I have also bought a Ivy bridge lately, you can see my rig in my signature. Before I had an i5 at 2.8 GHz, now I have 4.5. I have spend some time with applying tweaks to my fsx.cfg and optimizing the sliders. The most things I run on max expect water and AI traffic (50% WoAI), car traffic (0%) and boat traffic (0%) also airport vehicles are off.

Weather and textures are provided by AS2012 with a resolution of 1024, visible distance at ground 25 NM and in the air, above 8000ft 50 NM with a cloud draw distance of 70 NM (within FSX) if I remember correct.

My frames are limited by NVIDA Inspector to 30. And I noticed this results in the last few weeks of virtual flying:

 

With the PMDG MD-11 I get:

- 30 FPS while in the air

- 30 FPS on the ground on 'good' sceneries*

- 20 FPS on the ground on 'bad' sceneries*

- no big FPS influence on good sceneries but notable FPS influence on 'bad' sceneries**

 

With the PMDG 737 NGX I get:

- 30 FPS in the air

- 30 on the ground on 'good' sceneries*

- 20 on the ground on 'bad' sceneries*

- no big FPS influence on good sceneries but notable FPS influence on 'bad' sceneries**

 

*) 'Good' and 'Bad' sceneries sounds a little bit strange but let me explain it:

I have recently bought a package (GAP 3) which includes Berlin Tegel (EDDT) and Hamburg Flussbütel (EDDH). With no AI traffic and in same weather conditions I get much better frames on the Hamburg scenery than on the Berlin scenery although they were released together and are from the same developer. So I consider Hamburg a 'good' scenery and Berlin as a 'bad' scenery in regards of FPS.

FlyTampas LOWW has nearly no FPS impact. SimWings PANC for instance is somewhere between it (without WoAI traffic it is about 3-4 FPS better tough).

 

**) Well I can only imagine this that if FSX runs at the locked 30 FPS there is some reserve for calculating bad weather, while if FSX runs at 20 FPS in fair weather there isn't any reserve for bad weather and so FPS drop more.

 

The 800$ update I did to my computer recently helped, however it didn't help as much as I have expected.

 

And maybe I can give you a little hint on the power supply. Maybe you want to spend some more bucks and buy one with "Cable management"? This keeps unnecessary cables out of the case and provides better airflow.

I will surely consider getting one of those instead. That would be better for cable management John, ill look for one as well. Thanks for the tips guys!

Morgan why are you not getting a "K" version of the Ivy Bridge? Not overclocking? Then buy a Dell from BestBuy... Same thing.

I got the 2550K which I am still running at stock speed and it was £20 cheaper than the 2500K although the increase in speed is only slight.
