October 3, 201213 yr Author So, Ben, since you have a 660TI, do you think i can run the NGX and REX with comfortable fps? (The 660ti I'm looking at is EVGA superclocked, with an oc'd 3770K and ASUS Z77 Mobo.) The above 2 items are mainly what I am upgrading for, so they need to run good. Also, do you think I could run 4096 by 4096 aircraft textures? (Clouds don't need to be quite that high.) Thank you to everyone for your help so far!!! ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee
October 3, 201213 yr Ben, I have a 3 1/2 year old Dell XPS 730x computer that has · PCI_E1: x16 Physical, x16 Link (IOH) · PCI_E2: x1 Physical, x1 Link (ICH10) · PCI_E3: x16 Physical, x16/x8[10] Links (IOH) · PCI_E4: x1 Physical, x1 Link (ICH10) · PCI_E5: x16 Physical, x8 Link (IOH) Will the Asus 660 ti PCI Express 3.0 x16 work ok in any of the PCI slots in my PC? Thanks in advance to all who reply. Bill
October 3, 201213 yr So, Ben, since you have a 660TI, do you think i can run the NGX and REX with comfortable fps? Yes. - I run REX clouds and even in heavy thunderstorms, my FPS rarely drop below 25 even with 2xSGSS. The 660Ti runs FSX with SGSS very nicely. Will the Asus 660 ti PCI Express 3.0 x16 work ok in any of the PCI slots in my PC? Yes. - You just need to use the PCIe 2.0 x16 slot on your motherboard. PCIe3 GPUs are backwards compatible with PCIe2.
October 3, 201213 yr Author Yes. - I run REX clouds and even in haevy thunderstorms, my FPS rarely drop below 25 even with 2xSGSS. The 660Ti runs FSX with SGSS very nicely. Cool, thanks. I think that the 660ti is for me, then! ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee
October 3, 201213 yr Cool, thanks. I think that the 660ti is for me, then! Great choice! Be sure to post back to tell us what you think of the performance!
October 4, 201213 yr Ben, Not being an expert on this. Do you mean I should put the card in the PCI_E2: x1 Physical, x1 Link (ICH10) slot? Thank You. Bill
October 8, 201213 yr I bought the Asus 660 Ti : http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/NVIDIA_Series/GTX660_TIDC2O2GD5/ I have the same motherboard and CPU combo as you.....upgrading from an XFX 5850 there is a HUGE difference. Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte cards are better in my opinion because they use a non-reference cooler. The EVGA cards (I've had two) are all reference and run a little hotter and louder than non reference. There are several reviews out there so I suggest you read them. One disadvantage of the non-reference cards is that the hot air from the GPU gets exhausted back into your case. If your case has good airflow it isn't a problem as it only raised my case temp by 3 degrees. The hottest the GPU gets when stressed is 70c compared to the EVGA cards that top 80c. I read reviews of the cards and watched videos along with reading lots of forum posts before making my decision. I really think whatever you choose the 660 Ti is a great choice. IF you can afford to wait, I really think the prices are going to drop for Black Friday. Finally, some people will say that the 660 (Non- Ti) is a better choice because it is $70 less, but if you look at the specs and benchmarks it is clear that while close to the Ti's performance, the 660 will lose its punch faster as newer titles become available that require more shader performance. If you are only buying for FSX and have no intention of playing other games then the GTX660 might be suitable and save you a bit of cash.
October 8, 201213 yr ..upgrading from an XFX 5850 there is a HUGE difference Hooray! For once my advice works! Ben, Not being an expert on this. Do you mean I should put the card in the PCI_E2: x1 Physical, x1 Link (ICH10) slot? Thank You. Bill The PCIe 2.0 X16 slot is typically the top-most slot.(as in the one closest to the top of your case) Once you get it installed, take a picture and I can tell you if it is correct.
October 8, 201213 yr Author With the 3GB, would I see any performance increases in high demand situations? ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee
October 8, 201213 yr Thinking about replacing my 560ti then for the 660ti, is there any benefit running them together ?
October 8, 201213 yr With the 3GB, would I see any performance increases in high demand situations? If you are running 3 monitors, yes 3GB will help. But, if you are only a one monitor user, stick to the standard 2GB model. Thinking about replacing my 560ti then for the 660ti, is there any benefit running them together ? No. Run the 660Ti without any other cards in the system.
October 8, 201213 yr And if you do sli the total eam does not increase. You will still have 2 gb of vram
October 20, 201213 yr Author If you are running 3 monitors, yes 3GB will help. But, if you are only a one monitor user, stick to the standard 2GB model. No. Run the 660Ti without any other cards in the system. Yes, it will be one monitor. I have seen some negative feedback on the 660ti over in the forum here, and a flightsim, so is it still a worthwile card? Most people say it is far worse than the 670, but the 670 is $200 more for a simple memory bandwidth increase! So, hence my confusion, again :( . ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee

I've run benchmarks and thoroughly tested this card with FSX. It is a viable card to use and yields great performance.
October 20, 201213 yr Author Okay Ben, so do you think there would be any benefit of that larger memory bandiwth? ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee
