Big screen (27 inch, 2560px) or 3 24 inch screens?

Featured Replies

I really can't make up my mind. Any advice is welcome.

Option 1:Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM (550 euro) 2560x1440 px.

+ Needs less space on my desk

- Less visibility then 3 screens

+ Less performance hit then 3 screens i think

+ Bigger screen is also nicer for normal windows work

- when zooming out more, the widescreen effect on 1 monitor looks works then on 3 monitors that are placed at a slight angle of each other

Option 2: 3x 25inch LG E2541T-BN (420 euro) 5760x1080

+ broadest view

- performance hit in FSX?

- still same windows resolution is i currently have

- centre screen is smaller (and i'm looking most of the time at that one..)

(- needs ATI eyefinity card, that i'm going to buy soon anyway)

I think i'll go for option 1 because i don't really like 3 monitors (plus 1 laptop) on my desk, and i like higher res for windows use)

As for which to get I would recommend something like what I'm using, and instead of the ATi card get an Nvidia card because they now support 3+ monitors as well. That being said, there is one problem with Nvidia multi-monitor support which is that all of your monitors need to have identical EDID information or you will have to modify the monitor drivers so they all match each other. I have to do this with mine, and it's a pain. Once you find out the correct settings you don't have to mess with it again though.

I own and use your option 1 and it is a nice monitor. at 18 to 24 inches away from my head it takes up my field of vision nicely. I chose a one monitor set up after thinking about the same thing myself because I did not want the monitor bezels breaking up the image.

You raise a good point lthendrix, viewing distance is a very important part of the equation so the further away you get, the larger the screen and higher resolution you should use.

I would go for one big single 1080p monitor. You can go with a Dell Ultrasharp, no doubt it will look great but remember there are round 50% more pixels so that means quite a performance drop.

Still better than 3 screens though, which means 3 times as many pixels so probably only half of the performance. Whether it looks nice or not, it's in my opinion - due to the big performance loss - totally not worth it. Maybe in a few years - IF there's a new simulator that's well coded and runs smoothly - then can run 3 monitors without having a big performance hit, but currenlty with FSX, nah, not worth it.

Go with the triple! I am running with 2 GTX570s and did not suffer any performance loss after upgrading from single card/screen. The cards do occasionally hit 80% now, where the single rarely hit above 60%.

I did option 1 and 2.

First setup was 3x24" @ 1920x1080 on a ATI HD5870 and the performance hit was large. With 3 Monitors in eyefinity/Triplehead2go you dont really get too much more view. Maybe an additional 20-30 degrees of view. It more stretches the original image to give the illusion of peripheral vision. Yes it looks awesome but for the cost to keep the performance you get right now is very large. At first the bezels didnt bother me but after 6 months they eventually got on my nerves.

My final setup is a 42" @ 1920x1080 LEDTV. Im very happy with this setup, gives me detail and if i need to look around i use the TrackIR. It costed WAY less then the 3 screens and it fits nicer into my other games too(BF3).

Obviously its only my opinion but im super happy with what I got now. Not to happy on what ive spent to get here though...
