I said I like that SDK install guide... and it worked great as far as I can tell... a good test (beside how I have tested already) will be if AS2012 works np.

Well, you originally started out on another sim designed to take better advantage of modern computers. Going from there to FSX rather than the other way around is going to be a shock (even more so if you are from the gaming world) and will give an immediate example of why scenery companies such as Orbx are so successful.

 

There are rewards, but be prepared for a substantial hit on your wallet to get anything even near the experience I suspect you might be looking for.

 

Avsim itself has an extensive library of freeware for beautifying things a bit, but the learning curve of installing such things while keeping FSX healthy might force a reinstall or two. You might want to make a backup of that pristine FSX folder just in case.

If I mess it up.. "if" lol.... can't i just delete it all and re-install it from the disks?

 

I started reading Word Not Allowed's guide..if that's the best place to start.... already baffled with a few things.

 

First off though I would just like to find the best settings from the menu without "tweaking " anything.

NickN's guide was fine, for the hardware of 2009

I myself, have recently bought FSX (for the 3rd time in my life) and installed / uninstalled it three times :-) (typical of me...). The last version was bought from GFWL, a PITA to download, and I really don't like the fact that once installed the original compacted folders are erased so that a reinstall will require a new 12G download...

 

The last time (last week) FSX Gold was installed in my PC (where it lasted a long 4 days period) it was tweaked using simply Word Not Allowed's guide. I never install scenery / aircraft other than those I originally bought for FSX long ago... I have Aerosoft Lukla, EGLL, and a few airplanes (LevelD767, RAir Scout, sf260, duke, Flight1 pc-12 and atr-500). I installed because was mad at my other sim for not properly replicating Sun rise / set times :-/...

 

FSX runned smoooooooth as silk this way... It was my 3rd install of FSX when I got a message during activation saying that the code had been used too many times already ... Well, I don't remember if the same applies to the boxed version (?).

 

Make a safe backup of the fresh install, and of the directories where the main conf files are stored!!! usually under users\<your user>\Add-Data\Local\Microsoft\fsx and users\<your user>\Add-Data\Roaming\Microsoft\fsx too ;-)

 

I'm back on my base sim tough, and it's really easy to simply move from a folder to another and run from there with no problem :-)

Indeed, vanilla FSX is not pretty by todays standards. Nothing $200 worth of addons can't fix however. lol

There is plenty of freeware aircraft and airports. The Orbix Demo scenery of Washington is a excellent place to start and see what addons you may want.

This is precisely what I did for my last set up... install W7 / FSX as per NickN then go thru Word Not Allowed's guide for further tips.

 

It was over a year before I purchased my first add-on. Kidding aside (Bumpy) there is absolutely no reason to purchase anything to set up or enjoy FSX.

 

You just have to be willing to spend a short time reading and applying what people like Nick have provided us for years to get the most out of the sim.

After a few hours of playing with the settings things are looking better...not great but better.

One thing that really bothers me is changing camera views causes a delay in the time the paint catches up with the plane. The planes A321 and the 747 are grey for a second before the graphics show up.

Don't forget to defrag.

Yup, and for some reason its even longer in DX10 for the paint to catch up.

If you are not going to install a bunch of addons, is there any real need to install out of the (X86) Program Files?

File permissions issues. Safer to install someplace else.

This is not disgusting. :lol: and it's DX10, too - Orbx PNW.. sweet.. but it takes work to get this.
