I have read Kostas guide only to realize I cannot find any of the files that require the tweaking. Is there an easy way to identify them?

The FSX.cfg is located in: C:\Users\(your user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX. It is a hidden file. Open up Windows Explorer and, in the menu at the top click on Tools then Folder Options. Once Folder Options is open, click on the View Tab and look down at Advanced Settings. Go to Hidden Files and Folders and click on Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

 

For your display driver settings, click on the How To instructions posted by Paul which is pinned at the top of this forum. It will tell you exactly where and how to download the latest Nvidia Inspector. He will then guide you the proper settings you should set for best viewing. Word Not Allowed's guide is good too but mostly for DX9 and not for DX10. It will work but Paul has the best. Me? I use the default settings Nvidia technicians set up for FSX. No tweaks. Works great.

Yes, page 2 has the info on the Nvidia Inspector if you don't have it installed already. You have a very nice system but there is one tweak in the FSX.cfg that needs to be set and that's the highmemfix=1 tweak in the Graphics section. Word Not Allowed's guide has a really good explanation as to what the tweaks do. I mentioned above about using the default settings in my display driver but that's for DX10 as FSX pretty much disregards display driver settings when in DX10 mode. You need to change display driver settings in DX9 mode (the default mode for FSX).

Yes, you must open Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. Windows Explorer has all of your directories. If you can't find how to open it, click on the Start button, click on All Programs, then Accessories and click on Windows Explorer. If you have the computer icon on your desktop, you can simply double click that too.

No. Back in the day, I experimented with the most demanding scenery at the time, which was Aerosofts newly released Manhattan for fsx. There were quite a few threads about frame rate at the time, and I and others found that the scenery definitely ran better with HT off. Mathijs stepped in to confirm that in his findings, and the thread then went off into a discussion of thread collisions.

 

FSX loves more cores, but it does not love virtual cores. I did a lot of frame rate tests after that with other scenery's, which confirmed it for me. I doubt anything has changed since then, though who knows if DX10 feels the same way?

Doing it manually is kinda hard when you don't have a handle on what the things you are supposed to change are even doing yet. Also, some of those entry's have to be created manually unless you use this tool. You can save your original CFG and compare the two to gain some insight into the inner workings of the tweak-fest known as FSX.

Thanks, I looked at that link before. Does Vsync refer to screen tearing? I get that when I use Trackir.

Yah. Vsync is screen tearing. Most people handle that from nvidia inspector or their graphics card settings though.

 

There are some new nvidia settings people are playing with, but I am not up on that or the dx10 thing so somebody else might have more info.

 

As for ht I checked it inactive because it was. I hated turning it off, but so few programs out there besides the OS itself took any real advantage of it that I have never missed it. Plus, when overclocking, turning off HT is also suggested so.........

As for tweaking your FSX CFG. Try this.

 

Nothing against Bojote's tweaks but they are not for everyone. His tweaking machine tweaks configs unnecessarily. Most of his tweaks were meant for lower-powered systems and older computers to get the most performance as possible out of FSX without upgrading to a high-powered system. Mike, I would strongly suggest staying away from the recommendation.
