October 18, 201213 yr Good news for people without all day to sim the long haul routes who want to fly the 777 on 'unrealistic' short haul routes. Here are a couple of great real world excuses for using big planes (these were for the A380) on short to very short haul routes. BA will initially be flying their new A380's on short haul European routes to maximise cabin crew and pilot training opportunities, by using the planes this way their A380 crews can fly up to 4 sectors a day. Even better, when Air France were introducing their A380 fleet they flew them between Paris and London (just over 200 miles apart) partly for crew training and partly to not have the planes sitting around between long haul flights. If it's good enough for an A380 it's good enough for a T7 (source : http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/bas-first-a380s-to-ply-short-haul-routes-to-train-crews-377714/ ) Gary Lowndes
October 18, 201213 yr Neat! I plan to fly some short Asian routes too. Philip D. Schmidt Jensen - Denmark
October 18, 201213 yr Here are some shorter routes which iv'e flown on before (in the real world): YYZ - YUL, AC77W YVR - YYZ, AC77L HND - ITM, NH772 FUK - NRT, JL773 KIX - OKA, NH773 NRT - CTS, NH772 NRT - ICN, KE772 LAX - DEN UA772 All really short routes. Plenty of flights to try in the 777. Cheers, Tino Sante Sottile
October 18, 201213 yr Emirates has some very nice flight regularly flown with the Triple: Dubai - Muscat - Dubai, UAE866/867 (many daily flights), 1 hour Dubai - Doha - Dubai, UAE843/844 (many daily flights), 1 hour Dubai - Bahrain - Dubai, UAE837/838 (many daily flights), 1 hour 15 minutes Dubai - Dammam - Dubai, UAE821/822, 1 hour 20 minutes Dubai - Riyadh - Dubai, UAE817/818, (many daily flights), 1 hour 40 minutes Dubai - Kuwait City - Dubai, UAE871/872, (many daily flights), 1 hour 40 minutes Dubai - Basra - Dubai, UAE946/947, (many daily flights), 1 hour 50 minutes There's also some other nice destinations a bit further away from the sandpit, you may want to look the destination map: http://www.emirates.com/english/destinations_offers/route_maps/route_map.aspx Regards PMDG & MAJESTIC SOFTWARE BETA CPL (A) + ME/IR Aleksi Lindén
October 18, 201213 yr Commercial Member Oh the assumptions of flight simmers... Large airplane != long route Large airplane = lots of passengers and cargo Sure, they often go hand in hand, but still. "Realism" is a word too often thrown around by those who have no idea what 'real' really is... Kyle Rodgers
October 18, 201213 yr On that note Kyle, I would really love to fly FRA-LHR in a DLHA388 or a BAW777... that would be exceptionally fun... As it is, I get squeezed into an overbooked B735, A319, A320... now and then there is the A321, and BAW uses the 763 on the route from time to time... Let's face it, I counted 19 flights today (all carriers) between FRA and LHR... I would have thought it would have made sense to fly a little less often and higher capacity instead... But that is just me... A Andrew Entwistle
October 18, 201213 yr BA regularly use the 777 on shuttle flights to maximise destinations and transfers. Bahrain-Doha Abu Dhabi - Muscat St Lucia-Port of Spain Antigua-St Kitts Antigua-Punta Cana Antigua-Grenada Antigua-Tobago Abuja-Lagos (not a pax transfer) Those are just a few of the routes for short (average < 1 hour, sometimes 15minutes (ANU-SKB)) flights. Plus the LGW 777 fleet has been substituting for the 737 at LGW this year due 737 unservicability. Short Haul in a 777-200, fun! GregL :-)

October 18, 201213 yr Commercial Member Let's face it, I counted 19 flights today (all carriers) between FRA and LHR... I would have thought it would have made sense to fly a little less often and higher capacity instead... You'd think. The problem isn't that simple, though. In cases of short routes, it comes down to economic elasticity (if I'm remembering my econ classes correctly). I need to be in New York tomorrow. Airline A determines 2000 people need to move from Washington DC to NY in a given day. That's 4 747 flights, or 16 737 flights. Spreading those flights through the "normal" flight times (0600-2100), you get about the following: 747: 0600, 1200, 1700, 2100 or 737: 0600, 0700, 0800, 0900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100 Simplifying this some, say it's a weekend. If I'm a passenger, and it's the weekend, a number of factors could go into my decision to take a flight. If the first flight is 0600, I'm not getting up that early, but I'd like to be out of here well before 1200. On such a short flight, I could easily drive, or take the train, or a bus. Better yet, airline B offers a flight at 0800 because they use the 737. I don't have to get up too early, and I don't have to waste all morning waiting for the 1200 flight. Then again, just the opposite holds true for certain routes. One of the reasons, one of my former employers went under is that they were operating too many flights to a destination with a plane that's not exactly a low-cost aircraft. Sometimes it makes sense to throw a large capacity aircraft on a route. It happens all the time during vacation months. I remember I flew in a 777 from IAD-MIA back in the late 90s because they needed the extra capacity on the route. Most of the time, though, people don't bend on time convenience on short routes. If it's a short flight, it's "why should I have to wait?" If it's a long flight, it's "well, I'm on the thing for 14 hours anyway, so departure time is departure time." Kyle Rodgers
October 18, 201213 yr Well when hauling cargo, I have done a lot of short hauls in the MD-11, where I get a few minutes at flight level 300 before I have to do the descent and get ready for landing. On a real note, the Japanese are thinking of going high density seating on the 777, and replacing their 747-400Ds with them.
October 18, 201213 yr I'm not sure if American still does this, but at one time they had a 777 flying from ORD to DFW. When I was at UPS we ran the 747 and the MD-11 from DFW to SDF. Derek
October 18, 201213 yr Interesting topic! Delta flies -200LRs from ATL to LAX (flt 1455) and from LAX to ATL (flt 16). Mike
October 18, 201213 yr Back in the day, Delta regularly flew 777's from ATL to MCO (Atlanta to Orlando) for the very same reasons listed in the original post- to speed up Crew familiarization. Eric Tomlin Flight Line Simulations www.FlightLineSimulations.com
October 18, 201213 yr Here are some shorter routes which iv'e flown on before (in the real world): YYZ - YUL, AC77W YVR - YYZ, AC77L Cheers, Tino I have also flown on both of these routes RW. Just to clarify though YYZ-YUL is 42 minutes flight time. YYZ-YVR is 5 hours, not terribly long for a 777 but certainly not a very short flight for FSX. Mark CYYZ
