FSX in slow motion, questions about trying to understand this issue

Featured Replies

I have found some other posts here on this topic, but before I start making changes I would like to understand more about what is happening here.

The situation: In this past week my FSX has gone to “slow motion”. This is not an fps issue, nor is a simulation rate (as defined in the FSX menu). Both are unchanged (and 1X in the case of the sim rate). But when I put the NGX into a standard rate turn (360 degrees in 2 minutes), the entire 360 degrees takes much longer- maybe twice as long. It’s almost as if the time dimension is screwed up. And when I get the 15 second count-down on initializing the NGX, this now takes twice as long- I actually have the banner flash off then on again for the next count-down as the time between “seconds” is so long.

Looking at several other posts here, which may or may not be regarding the specific issue I have but sound like the same thing, the culprit was either “SimConnect” or “DLL.XML” (both are referring to the same thing, I assume). In one case a re-install of an add-on (UTX2) fixed it, and I believe in the other case a re-construct of DLL.XML. Since I don’t know that this is a SimConnect issue I have posted here in the main FSX forum.

In the past week I have been trying to create some scenery edits with ADE. On one occasion, in my haste to compile a scenery change and look at the effect in FSX, I may have started FSX before ADE had quit, as I got an error on FSX start-up that FSX could not write to FSX.CFG. FSX proceeded to startup and everything looked OK until I noted this error. The other issue that I have noted as the add-on GSX now starts an indexing function (noted in red text at the top of the screen), although this could be related to my scenery edits more than this issue, and be normal.

I guess my first question is does anyone have any information in this issue that would help me in determining what to do next, and also help me understand. The obvious fix for most FSX things is to have FSX re-created FSX.CFG, and I have not yet done this. I have printed out the files (in Note-Pad) DLL.XML and EXE.XML, and cannot see any missing or scrambled structure in them (as I have seen in EXE.XML previously when add-ons have scrambled that file). But only a cursory look, so I may need to look further at that.

Do the files EXE.XML and DLL.XML get re-created if I rename them? (I realize I would need to either add the contents back into the file(s) to get the functionality back of the add-ons that would be affected, or un-install and re-install them).

Any help is most appreciated. Thanks, Bruce.

Hello Bruce

ADE and FSX can run at the same time, in fact you can connect ADE to FSX, so I don't think that was the issue.

I'm not on my FSX PC right now.

Rename fsx.cfg and let FSX rebuild it.

Uncheck all add on scenery.

You can check if dll.xml and exe.xml get recreated, just rename them and restart FSX.

Worst case scenario: FSX won’t start or probably popup a warning message.

Also try this:

Check if your computer time and date are correct. (If not then replace the battery)

Open up Task Manager and verify that no process is eating up your CPU time.

(System Idle Process should fluctuate between 95-99)

In case another process is taking most CPU time, check and see if it is valid or legit, wait for it to tone down. If it doesn’t , then you either have some system file corruption or worst a malware program. Run a complete virus check.

Run a chkdsk /f on your hardrive (If the "in use" message appears click OK and accept schedule a scan, then reboot).

Cheers

Ramón.

Do the files EXE.XML and DLL.XML get re-created if I rename them?

No. Specific installers create them. This only happens in turns? If so its turn bank angle.

Thanks Ramon and Rendi,

Ramon, I'm not at my PC now but will try what you suggest.

Rendi, no, I just quoted "turns" as a measurable activity, but everything is in slow motion, even ground-speed (as seen from the a/c close to the ground) is slow and it takes twice as long to get from point A to point B. looks like the sim rate issue, but that is 1X and normal.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Head wind? :) I have no idea what could cause that. if it were your computer you would have stutters.

No, just the "time dimension" is screwed up. I know this sounds wierd- no fps issues, everything is as fluid as it has been. When we reduce sim-time in the FSX menu, we make time go by more slowly, and we make the sim go more slowly too, so if flaps take 10 seconds normally to deploy, then at 1/2 time they would take 20 seconds. But here the time goes by at 1/2 time (approx.), but the sim keeps normal time. It's the rate at which things work at which has changed. The only stutters or "jerky" motion I get in in the HGS (on the NGX), where it jerks a lot- which is new, so presumably a part of the "time warp" thing.....

I know this sounds wierd, but once I try re-building FSX.CFG and look more closely at the DLL/EXE.XML files, I might know more. This is what is bothering me- I can't figure out what would do this! But theer are other posts here that describe the issue and were attributed to the .XML files, out which I know next to nothing....

This may even end up being a good time to re-insttal FSX as FSX-Gold (with Acceleration), and on a digital drive, if I can't sort this out.... :)

Thanks, Bruce.

Have you tried speeding up the sim rate and than later toggling it back to 1X? have you tried a repair install of FSX?

After running ok over the weekend and some of last week, my "slow motion" FSX issue is back. In one way I am glad in that it might help me get to the bottom of this issue, as I figured it was only a matter of time until it returned.

Tonight I tried rebuilding FSX.CFG, and (as another user here tried successfully) renaming DLL.XML then renaming it back again after running FSX. None of those things worked to rectify this issue, however I am wondering if it might be related to booting up the PC since I did this tonight (my PC ran all weekend with no issues when running FSX).

I don't think I explained what is happening too well in my last posts in this thread. Tonight I noted that the clock in the various aircraft I tried is running slow, not 1/2 speed, but 60 seconds of real time is about 45 seconds in FSX time (as measured on the aircraft clock). When I show the second hand on my PC clock it runs correctly, so it's not the PC time that's slow. I'm not sure where FSX gets it's time reference from, maybe that's a question. I will continue to try to figure this out, but in the meantime any suggestions are most welcome. I have also tried changing the sim rate to 2x then back to 1x, but that doesn't fix it. The other noticeable thing is a huge increase in fps as read in FSX (shift-Z). The sim doesn't seem any more fluid, but I was getting over 100 fps at KDEN with a default plane with all sliders maxed, which I have never seen before.

Thanks for any suggestions, Bruce.

Hi Bruce !

I have exactly the same problem since last evening. What I did is just install the new Flight 1 DC9 SP1 (after having properly uninstalled the first version). Since I can't find any information about such an issue by anyone else, I don't think the DC9 is the culprit. I'd hate to have to reinstall FSX (I just spent two months to carefully install everything on a new SDD), so could you please tell us if you found a solution to this strange issue ?

Thanks

I have the same problem...which seems to have appeared out of no where.  My sim "time" is operating at a slower speed than realtime....and strangely my FPS have skyrocketed into the stratosphere.  Cant seem to figure out what is causing the problem.  Have u had any luck in fixing it?  Appreciate any insight u have for me.

I reinstalled UT2.....and it seems to have fixed my problem. Not sure what caused it...but I am happy to see it go!
