October 28, 201213 yr I have been using a Samsung 24" TN monitor for my FS rig for years. I got an unexpected bonus from work recently and decided to blow it on something I wanted for a change, instead of benefiting the entire family (man, do I feel guilty now, LOL...) or putting away in savings as has been customary during this recent economy. Ssshhh - I haven't told my wife yet.... Anyway, after reading around the forums and a few PC magazine reviews, I chose to indulge myself with the Dell U3011 30" IPS panel. Coupled with my GTX570 and my TrackIR5, I'm hoping it will be a nice upgrade for most of my big-iron flying in the VC and all the add-on goodies fully displayed at 2560x1600. Can't wait - it arrives Tuesday. Regards, Al Jordan | KCAE

October 28, 201213 yr They are well and truly worth it, With a beefed up system, and running at full resolution.... Unbeaten, Especially if you like VFR flying and love to see the runway from a long way off to line up with no instrument approaches. That was my main reason for indulging in that particular monitor.
October 28, 201213 yr Author Thanks guys, I am looking forward to it. I just told the wife about it - but, I didn't mention how much it costs though (yet)... Regards, Al Jordan | KCAE
October 28, 201213 yr ... I just told the wife about it - but, I didn't mention how much it costs though (yet)... Just lie! Life's short enough as it is. The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA

October 29, 201213 yr Thanks guys, I am looking forward to it. I just told the wife about it - but, I didn't mention how much it costs though (yet)... There's no need for her to know the actual number. As long as you're both happy its fine. If she doesn't ask, don't tell. If she does, say you got if for a great price. So far it has worked for me with my current 24" IPS. Quite tempted on a 30" now after a few years but a bit worried I can't pull off the trick again.

He he he, well, when you decide to "man-up" (LOL), let me know how that works out for 'ya (telling your wife the cost) and then I'll consider it! LOL.. :Chicken: Regards, Al Jordan | KCAE
October 29, 201213 yr Author Oh what the hell - if I don't spend it, my wife will. A monitor this nice just deserves a matching GPU - and they're on sale too! My wife would be proud, LOL... EVGA GeForce GTX 680 SC Signature2/Dual Fan/2048MB GDDR5 (02G-P4-2687-KR) Regards, Al Jordan | KCAE
October 29, 201213 yr Author BTW, althought the monitor has no audio, is the HDMI connection preferred over DVI in any way? I know HDMI is preferred for TV's, but I wasn't sure about computers these days. Thanks... Regards, Al Jordan | KCAE
October 29, 201213 yr DVI and HDMI are practically the same thing (minus the audio for DVI of course), they are both a digital signal so they are a all or nothing connection i.e. picture quality will be identical. Cheers, Andy.

I know HDMI is preferred for TV's, but I wasn't sure about computers these days. Thanks... Ahha (to answer my own question) - according to the online documentation (setting the maximum resolution) for the monitor, it would appear only the DVI-D and DisplayPort connetors carry the full 2560x1600 resolution. The HDMI connector only carries 1920x1200. http://support.dell....imal Resolution Regards, Al Jordan | KCAE
