October 30, 201213 yr The Bounty has been lost. This boat has a lot of meaning for my ancestry from Nova Scotia that had built her. At this point, 14 souls have been saved by the US Coast Guard, two souls lost including the captain has been lost. This storm was huge and spread out, so hope all is well for all of my friends on here on AVSIM. I pray you are well, your water is draining out, your power is restored, your lives go back to normal.... With that this song is dedicated to the loss of the Bounty from Nova Scotia, This one is from Stan Rogers, because it best describes those abandoned at sea waiting for the Coast Guard: Here is a closeup of the carving on this beautiful ship that I took back in 2006: I wish all the best for the friends and family related to this boat and mourn the loss and pray for the dead. Like Stan Roger Says, She is worth more at float and at the dock, so perhaps one day she may rise again.... Rise again, rise again - though your heart it be broken And life about to end No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend. Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again. October 30, 201213 yr A couple of years ago, I signed aboard another tall ship, the Picton Castle, based in Lunenburgh, N.S., for one of those "working vacations." Even this old fart from Indiana was touched by the sea. In that and a couple of other voyages, I found the whole fraternity of tall-ship crews that I met, many of whom are young people, to be one of dedication, hard work, camaraderie and adventure. The loss of these souls is tragedy enough for family and friends, but it is our loss too because they are but another broken thread in our connection to the past ... a past before planes, before gps and before the comforts of modern flight; a past when all we needed was " a tall ship and a star to steer her by." May they and the HMS Bounty rest in peace.
October 30, 201213 yr Author Yep....I remember the Picton Castle. I have a few photos of that one in my collection as well. All I will say is RIP Laura Gainey. I took these just after that incident, looks like life goes on indeed (which is important): Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
October 30, 201213 yr I was aboard the Picton Castle when Laura was lost. She and I became good friends; she was my watch captain. She once told me after dinner at the Grand Banker, "You remind me of my dad. Especially when you bought my dinner." She reminded me of my daughter.

Lots of talk over the media over the years because of her father and the rest of it at that time. All I can say is you are very blessed to have spent that time with her, and to get to know her. I wish you all the best with your life my friend, as that is the best way to carry her light. All the best to you and your family. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
October 30, 201213 yr Too bad. I've visited The Bounty a few times here in NC. This past July I spotted her north of Roanoke Island in Albemarle Sound (Outer Banks). What irritates and surprises me most about this tragedy is the blatant decision to push onward despite Sandy. Would anyone else agree this was a disregard for ship and seamen? Very sad pictures of her sinking can be found at various sites. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
October 30, 201213 yr Author I was wondering about the circumstances too. But I guess I was too shy to ask. No worries....Bottom line, the captain is responsible for his ship. For me to comment is speculation so here is my view on this one. That ship was in dry dock in Boothbay Harbor, Maine and was launched on 22 October 2012. It was heading to Florida for the winter season. The Captain was aware of the storm after they set sail and was heading east to try and avoid it. The thing about the North Atlantic is a lot of ships set out in October/November from Massachusetts up to Newfoundland, heading south for the warmer waters, as summer is ending in the north, and they are sailing for the winter season in the tropics. With that they are taking a risk as this time is also hurricane season in the Atlantic. Every captain makes a plan and goes to great lengths to avoid the danger, however sometimes Mother Nature knows better. Shipping is very different from Aviation as when I was flying, I would wake up, if conditions were not VFR, I would stay home to live and fly another day, with Shipping, you check the weather on one day, set out, and over the course of your journey that lasts days or weeks, conditions change, so you make decisions accordingly. This situation is a very unfortunate loss. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
October 30, 201213 yr I have always been a fan of tall ships...brings me back to my sailing days. I loved the tall ship festivals out in Victoria. The loss of the those sailors is a terrible tragedy, only amplified by the great vessel they sailed on. I watched Mutiny on the Bounty yesterday evening as a sort of final look. That classic film will always be a bit strange to watch from now on. I too was thinking of the ol' Stan when I heard the news. Patrick Houghton
October 30, 201213 yr Years ago when she was stationed in St. Pete, I made several trips over and climbed all over that magnificent ship. Just to look at all the rigging would make you appreciate the skill of the early sailors. I'm very sad that she went down and for the soul(s) that were lost with her. Thank you. November 2, 201213 yr Author I didn't realize until today that the victim on the Bounty was Claudine Christian, who is the great great gran daughter of Fletcher Christian (who was the one who seized command of the original Bounty). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fletcher_Christian Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
