hello

I know that at gtx2XX times a guide ( i forgot which guide it was ) explained the difference between AMD gpu and nvidia gpu. It said that nvidia was better for FSX.

Is this still current ?

A gtx660 ti will be much better than a 7950 for FSX, no ?

(sorry for my english ... )

6xx series and later Nvidia GPUs are now very similar is design philosophy to ATI/AMD GPU's, so the lead that Nvidia once had in FSX is no longer there or not so big. I still think Nvidia make better more reliable drivers though.

Cheers, Andy.

Correct. The 660Ti is a much better choice than the 7950.

For FSX Nvedia is the only option.

The 6xx is the way to go.

This is simply not right.

ATI/AMD stopped supporting DX9 long time ago and FSX is DX9. NVedia has continued to support DX9.. which means they have continued to support FSX which ATI/AMD could not be bothered with.

The only advantage ATI/AMD had was multi monitor which nVedia 6xx does quite well so the NVedia has moved so far ahead of ATI/AMD is left in the dust and not even an option for FSX today.

Also DX-10 has moved in and alot of the AMD folks still cant get their cards to work. I switched to nvidia when I moved to DX-10 because my 6950 would not work. That being said the 6950 was a decent card for DX-9. Frames were good and I had a smooth sim.

I have only had 1 ATI for a long time, my others were 8800GTX & 560Ti,

I can't speak for other newer or older ATI cards, but the 6990 works flawlessly on my setup and running DX10 (with patches as stated here in AVSIM Forums).

According to these tests:

http://www.hwcompare...on-hd-7950-3gb/

The only advantage of gtx 660 ti is texture filtering and power consumption. (and DX9 )

But the memory bandwith of the 7950 is really high compared to FSX.

Also the pixel rate.

I don't know if these 2 (last) things are important for FSX, and which of these 3 things is the most important...

What if you have IMC (Low visibility) in the weather and tons of clouds.. Does the ATI card display those heavy clouds reasonably well in DX9?

For FSX I've used an Nvidia 8800 GTS for a couple of years. Three years ago I built a new PC (i7 860 @ 3.6 Ghz) and got an AMD 5850. I never really had to tweak much...it just worked out of the box with no .cfg tweaking either and I got decent frame rates. When the PMDG 737NGX came along I knew I needed a little more horsepower, so two months ago I built a new i7 3770K rig with two SSD's and an Asus GTX 660 Ti. While I am now pleased with it's performance in FSX it did take many hours of tweaking and testing. Honestly I never had a problem with AMD or Nvidia drivers and I have owned both chipsets for over a decade. You will pay a premium for Nvidia versus AMD. If this is ONLY for FSX then I really believe it comes down to personal preference. The new Nvidia 600 series GPU's are extremely power efficient and thus run cooler than the 500 series (Fermi) cards. While the majority of people claim FSX is smoother using Nvidia there are plenty of us that have used AMD cards and have been very pleased with the performance they offer. One thing to keep in mind is that the 660 Ti has a 192 bit memory bus compared to a 256 bit on the 670. The AMD 7950 has a 384 bit memory bus though this is probably overkill for FSX it may benefit other games.

I bought an Asus 660Ti GTX today! Can't wait to try out this puppy. I am replacing my Asus 460GTX. I am hoping I will see a marked improvement in overcast /cloudy conditions. My current card is very stuttery in dense cloud. (60mi cloud draw)
