What is the best start of a topic title?

Featured Replies

Just noticed these three topics in a row (not Photoshopped) on the MS FSX Forum index:

Now I don't know what is the best start of a topic title but I do know what's the most used one... ^_^

I almost never respond to posts like those you mentioned because they are not specific, depends upon personal taste, and usually the poster provides no indication that they have done any research into their topic and already have obtained some views.

So my response is: Do some research please, then ask a more specific question like what would you folks say about this or that, pros and cons, as compared to this or that product.

I agree with your post 100%. Most of the time there is no best, only similar but with different features and is so subjective to each persons choice.

I find the best place to "do research" is in the responses to the posts Jeroen mentioned. :) Responses contain both subject and objective information, and often mention options I've never heard of before.

For an example, the thread asking about the best Cessna 172 was very useful.

Yes, a capital letter is the best way to start a topic.

(EDIT: My apologies in advance to 1stfltsimguy or jimburke if it seems like I'm having a go at them, I'm really not, just using their comments as a jumping off point. No offence intended, chaps.)

Bryan, JimBurke : Do you not think it's a valid approach to ask other simmers their opinion on a type of product they're looking into? I mean, true enough, if you take a "what is best" question entirely literally, then yeah it is a subjective thing to which there's no right or wrong answer. But if we take off our grammar-###### hats for a moment and apply common sense, what a lot of these people are really asking is "tell me your opinions/experiences of products that do X", not simply "tell me what to buy for I am a mindless sheep."

Now I'm a noted wordy bastit, with a touch typing speed that makes trained secretaries gasp, so when I've got that sort of question, I don't think twice about putting up a wall of text listing the research I've done, the options that I'm currently aware of and their relative merits as I understand them, followed by a clarification of what sort of feedback I'm looking for e.g. personal experiences of those options, any other alternatives I might have missed, etc. But some other people don't make such good wordings as me do, so they just ask "What's the best joystick?" and don't specify that they've already spent an hour researching but are drowning in a sea of marketing/sales ad copy. Can't we cut them some slack?

And on a related note, while I'm in rant mode. Every so often on internet fora, someone will post a question, and some.... fine gentleman will respond with a snarky "This topic has already been extensively discussed before. Learn to use the search function or do some research before asking questions." Well you know what, Mr Fine Gentleman sir? You've not only been snarky and unhelpful to the original poster, but you've been snarky and unhelpful to every future internet user who researched that topic and whose google search brought up that discussion thread. I can't count the number of times I've been researching a problem and found someone asking exactly the same question as I am in a forum post, only to find that snarky response turning that thread into a dead end. If you're going to be snarky, at least be helpful with it and show that you do know how to use the search engine by posting a link to one of those earlier threads on the subject. I mean, if it's that easy to do, it shouldn't take you but a moment, should it?

Finally person A asks "Can someone recommend a good freeware X please?"... someone is always going to respond... "Lots of freeware here at http://library.avsim.net" (or some other file library address)... yeah that's really helpful. I mean, all the original poster has to do is download all 172467 files, try them all out and make up his own mind. I mean it may have looked like he was asking for personal opinions and recommendations, but what he really wanted was to be told that the site he was posting on had a file library. Great, wonderful.

<deep breath, deep breath>

Sorry for the rant, pet peeves. Need cup of tea. But guys, with the world being such a generally sucky place, why don't we try make it a little bit better by cutting people a little slack?

I'm always interested in what are the best software add-ons for fsx. It's why I find FSX so enjoyable.

No one ever asked 'What is the best flightsim site ?'

hahaha

If the poster wants as many people as possible to read the topic, a topic heading that starts with: "Free Beer", would probably work...

Back on topic: I have to agree, the "what is the best" question seems is very easy to be misunderstood, especially the "What is the best AI traffic program?" one. I always try to ask for opinions on a certain topic, which IMHO doesn't tend to lead to such "wars" as the question for the best thing - maybe because it is clear from the beginning, that everything is posted as a personal opinion and not as the ultimate truth - , as this is always depending on personal preferences, expectations, and usually also on your system's capacities.

IMHO ideally the "Topic Title" should cogently and concisely summarize the actual contents of the post, and thereby capture the potential responder's attention and interest...
