Easy mental math question

Recommended Posts

Folks,

Just something for fun. I am attaching a picture that a friend of mine took recently on a flight of his. He was highlighting the strong head winds he had on the flight that day. BUt my question is, can you guys, just by looking at the photo, figure out the altitude (Flight level) he is at ? :)

FL340

-39 - 14 = -53

2 degrees per 1000ft from ISA at 0ft of 15 degrees C

-53 - 15 = -68

68/2= FL340

FL340?

(39/2=19.5, 15(standard atmoshere)/2=7.5, 14(Deviation)/2=7, 19.5+7.5+7=34)

Yup, all those who said 340 are correct :)

@Hans...Haahahahaha....On the ground at that speed, he should have been sitting in a hurricane shelter and not in an NG :)

@Chris..Absolutely spot on with the calculation.

Thanks all,

It's a joke, but you know, pre-flight... ;-)

Yes, got the joke :) But I am also wondering about the pre-flight. Will find out and revert back to you soon.

Yeah please, because I can't remember seeing pre-flight on my FMC? Or I just did not look good enough...

That is a part of ACARS functionality. Not modelled for NGX.

Hi to all,

According to me, to be more precise, at the inital question was to be added "in ISA condition" because if you wasn't in isa (i.e. temperature 15 C at sea level your result could be different...)

anyway here it's another question if I'm travelling at Mach 0,78 and my TAS is 448 kts which is my outside air temperature?

Best Regards

Peter,

I think you are right, it is probably part of the ACARS system. But the airline does not use ACARS on its NG fleet although you can see the ACARS "options" they are not functional
