Rex winds at altitude

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I don't post often but have upgraded recently to essential w overdrive. After a couple of hicups I think the programme is now properly installed.

Problem is that the winds aloft in REX are not even close to correct for my part of the world. I live in Perth Western Australia.

As an ex pilot i have access to all aviation forcasts and for example winds here at 18000 are currently 270/30 -10C and in REX its indicating 055/14 -4C. Its not just 18000 that is the problem, the only altitudes vaguely close are surface wind and 10000.

Guys that is a huge difference, am I doing something wrong?

Would appreciate any help or explanations you can offer.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Mad Dog

Good to see AS 2012 is at least correct. I dont know why Rex cant get it right.

Cheers

Tim

I see the same problems on the east coast of Australia. The strongest wind is at the surface!

My experience exactly, that's why REXE+OD is my textures, AS2012 SP2 is my WX engine and EZdok is my camera ;)

Have asked the same question on the REX support forums for no reply from them. Pretty ordinary service in my book.

I see lot of things saying how great the wx engine is, its not that good if winds at altitude are way off like they are.

The whole update from REX 2 is pretty much a non event imo. Will have watch Opus as when they get the winds at altitude right I will make the jump I suppose.

Pretty misleading info from Rex though imo.

Cheers

Tim

I'm certainly no expert here, but I would expect AS and REX to show differences as I believe they're using different data. REX is using actual balloon data, updated twice daily. I'm not an AS user, but I believe they use forecast data. While you can (and I think people have) argue which is "best", keep in mind that neither method gives you what's actually going on at the present moment. The balloon data is a snapshot in time, and the forecast data is just that - a forecast based on balloon data and wx models.

I kinda like the idea of using the real-world data, as major trends will be right, but it will deviate somewhat from the forecasts, which is what you'd get in the real world - to an extent. But in the end, they're still both approximations. None of the wx packages we stress over are, or can be, truly and fully real-world, real-time. They're all at the mercy of time lag, observation accuracy, interpolation between stations and so on.

Just a few thoughts... Of course there may be additional issues going on in your part of the world, Tim.

I collated some mumbers from various Australian airports this morning. Seems to me the 5000'and 10,000' temps are off.

I have seen a post about using REX for textures and ASE for winds aloft but it was some time ago. Any ideas on how to get these these two to work together in the same way in their latest versions

Many thanks

I'm having severe wind shifts between 0-360 deg back & forth the whole time at cruise, very annoying when flying on Vatsim! & my indicated airspeed changes the whole time 30-50 kts, back & forth due to erratic wind shifts. Anyone else having this problem? I'm using FSUIPC with wind/weather smoothing.
