If you look at my computer specifications, you can see that I have similar hardware components. I also previously ran FSX on a Core 2 Duo Apple iMac, which yielded pretty mediocre performance. Surprisingly, through good maintenance, I was able to achieve a solid 20 frames per second with the PMDG B747 and EZCA, FlyTampa, REX, etc.

I have to say that my new system has not produced as large of an improvement as I had hoped. I set scenery settings to about 3/4 of the maximum (vs. 1/3 of the maximum on the iMac), yet am still only able to maintain barely 24 frames per second, even with various tweaks applied. My QW B757 likes to drop to the high teens in the virtual cockpit. I have not overclocked though, and I have heard that doing so will help. Regardless, I am hesitant to overclock a stock computer.

I would recommend purchasing a NVIDIA card, because I think they are more flexible with the Inspector tool everyone is talking about. Windows 8 may have some issues, but I do not think there is a consensus among FSX users as to what causes these errors.
