DCS P-51: Need some honest purchase advice

Featured Replies

I am primarily an FSX user. I am thinking about buying DCS, especially for the Mustang. I have heard nothing but good things about this plane's realism and flight dynamics. It is made by Just Flight? I have never had a plane by Just Flight, and I'm sure they are a fine developer, but I don't think that in the FSX world they are noted for appealing to simmers who demand the highest level of realism and detail. I don't mean that in a bad way, I just don't want to get DCS unless it totally blows me away because I would have to buy new controllers and configure a completely new computer, so it is more than just buying DCS.

I have flown the A2A Mustang and am competent at it. It really isn't my cup of tea though because I just don't know what to do with it in FSX, and to be honest, though it I don't find it an especially hard plane to fly well, I don't find it actually a very pleasureable experience. How does this plane compare to the other? Leaving aside the working weapons, how does the DCS Mustang compare to the qualities of the other? Is setting up with a completely new sim going to be worth it, or should I just stick with the highly detailed planes in FSX?

Dcs is made by a company called eagle dynamics.

Although I do not have the mustang portion of the dcs series I would highly recommend trying dcs world out( it's free). With dcs world you get a su-25t. From there you can check out the environment and how the game engine is. The su25t isn't as complex as the a10, ka50, or mustang but is fun. If you are planning on purchasing and getting into this type of sim I would also recommend the thrust master hotas warthog. It was made for dcs a10.

I would say the DCS Mustang compares favorably with The A2A P-51D,Only it has 6 working .50 cals

The P51D in DCS is whey over sensitive resulting in frequent stalls & spins! IMO it's no where near A2A in regards of handling characteristics, it's really bad, & I regret buying it. Don't get me wrong, I love FC2 , DCS A-10 + world....but the P-51D FDE just doesn't feel real in DCS!

Kind regards

Robert, I'm curious. Are you a P-51D pilot? Not sarcasm, as you never know who's lurking the forums. At any rate, supposedly some real current Mustang pilots have nothing but good things to say about the DCS sim.

I, too, love the A2A add-on.

Apologies for my earlier confusion. When I saw the notice on the front of Avsim about the release of the Just Flight DCS Mustang, I though they meant that Just Flight were the makers of the airplane itself as a plug in for the DCS system. Now I understand that they are just the publisher.

So is the Mustang or A10 that you can buy from the Just Flight Website the same thing as the one for purchase on the Eagle Dynamics site? Looking through my old receipts I now realize I have bought something from the Just Flight shop before and I already have an account, so that would be my vendor of choice if both products are exactly the same. I suppose I need to download DCS World from the Eagle Dynamics website first?

Yes it is!

I have had it for a while, and really enjoy it!

Best thing to do is buy the P51 and then install DCS World(Free).

http://www.digitalco...product〈=en

Then download and install the DCS P51 module from here(Free):

http://www.digitalco...roducts〈=en

Finally activate the P51, using your key (that you received upon purchase from Justflight).,by launching DCS World!

Done.

Regards!

If you're into attack helos and CAS I would HIGHLY recommend getting the black shark 2 and a-10c ones as well if you have the coin. And like I said earlier if you want a really nice throttle and stick check out the thrustmaster hotas warthog. A-10c also has a third party iPad app(if you have one) that gives you a cdu, mcfd's, and some panels to make things a bit easier when flying. The app is called icontrol dcs.

Hi Zach! I haven't been that lycky.....yes I know....but the same goes for the A2A bird in FSX..so who's got it more "right" A2A or DCS? If you have them both there's an apparent difference in the FDE.

Kind regards

I have no experience with either the A2A P-51 or the DCS version. I do have hours on the DCS A-10C and I have found the controls on the sensitive side. This can be easily adjusted in the axis options of DCS world. I am sure the same is true for the P-51. As a RW pilot I can say DCS has the flight dynamics way better than FSX, especially outside the flight envelope. Stall and spinning is no question putting FSX in the dust. DCS has impressed me a lot with their products in this regard.

DCS sounds like a good change of pace from FSX. I'm not completely in the dark about it--when Black Shark first came out a few years ago, I got it, but put it on the shelf after an extremly short time because 1) my computer wasn't fast enough at the time, 2) My controllers weren't set up for a helicopter, 3) The learning curve to read the Russian displays was a bit too much for me and I wasn't prepared to undertake it. Now though things have changed, and it looks like the time is right. I'm in the process of setting up a system to accomodate DCS World as we speak.

Now here is a big question mark--I still have the Original Black Shark Boxed version I bought from Best Buy or wherever it was in 2009. On the back of the manual I have a registration code...does this mean I can just download the Black Shark 2 (v1.2.2) module from Eagle Dynamics, and use my original code to plug it in to DCS World? I don't have to reinstall anything from the CDs or anything? That would be very convenient if so, (but somehow I doubt it is going to be that simple.)

Hi, I think you have to buy the upgrade version of Black Shark 2 which is like 20$?. That is if you have v.1 of Black Shark.

Regarding the DCS P-51, all I can say is that, after I started using it, my other simulators went SHIFT DEL.... And... I am the sort of simmer who does not like air war (or war of any sort...).

My main concern is the accuracy of flight and systems modelling. I found it in DCS P-51, and look forward to buy BS 2 too.

The learning curve for DCS World and this P-51 is steep!!!! For me it's like being back to basic school :-)

My other sim? ELITE v8

I fly gliders in RL, btw....

What was I using before? Pretty much everything, from FSX Gold and X-Plane10, to MS FLIGHT and AeroFlyFS. I can only regret having spent so much money and time instead of having invested in DCS right from the start
