July 26, 200421 yr Just installed the new terrain mesh for Australia by Andy Weir and thought I would try it out by taking a flight over the Snowy Mountains in winter. While the terrain profile is now much closer to reality, Mt Kosciusko, Lady Northcote's Canyon and Watson's Crags can all be identified, but to my surprise no snow - this area is metres under snow in July and August. Now to my horror I have discovered in an old thread that MS has deliberately made it summer in Australia all year round!! To all my Northern Hemisphere friends Australia is a large country with many different climate zones and in winter there is snow over a large area above about 1200 metres. This appalling oversight by MS wasn't the case in FS2002.Now that I have got over that rant does anyone know of a work around to restore four seasons to Australia? Grateful for any assistance.Bruce Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
July 26, 200421 yr Author Well before launching into a rant I should have tried the suggestion of a poster in the old thread on this subject - simply replace the FS2004 seasons.bgl with the FS2002 version. While the original poster couldn't get this fix to work I had a go and it does seem to work for me and mountain winter snow is now restored in Australia. However no idea what this change does to the rest of FS2004.Bruce Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
July 26, 200421 yr Author Hi. I copied seasons.bgl from my FS2002 installation, it is in the main scenery directory to the FS2004 SceneryBaseScenery directory overwriting the FS2004 version (after making a backup). Now the original poster said this didn't work but it does for me. Now in making this change I guess you miss out on any beneficial changes to the representation of the seasons in FS2004 for other areas. But then you can always restore the original seasons.bgl if these exist.Hard to grasp what MS were thinking when they dreamt this one up. Perhaps someone told them that Australia doesn't have the dramatic seasonal changes of Europe or North America. While this true in some areas, exotic deciduous trees are widely planted in southern Australian cities and the mountains have snow. Also inland areas have a lot more green foliage in spring compared to other times of year when grasslands are withered by the heat in Summer and burnt by frost in Winter. So the look of the countryside does change with the seasons in Oz, sometimes quite dramatically.Bruce Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
July 26, 200421 yr Thanks BruceI've tried it and for the current Southern Hemishere Winter season, it now looks right.I guess we'll see if there are any problems with the other seasons, but for now you've made a lot of people happy wiith that find :-)Thanks againBen
July 26, 200421 yr This is interesting. Being from the US I dont fly in the southern Hemisphere very often, but I do appreciate reality and accuracy, so would like to make this change to the fs2002 seasons.bgl. Anybody know where its located on the FS8 CD's? Im gonna have to go fish them out and find it as I uninstalled FS8 ages ago.ThanksEric AND

July 26, 200421 yr Hmmm-- one thing that I have noticed in regard to lack of seasonal variation. In Fs2004 ,I fly around the island of Corsica which has mountains to heights of 6000 feet. I never get any snow on these mountains in winter. I have never been there myself - but I cannot imagine that European mountains at 6000' don't get snow in winter.Barry
July 26, 200421 yr Hi Barry,I can tell you I went hiking to Corsica in October, and we came out of the mountain hut the next morning, there was plenty of snow ; we were near Mount Incudine, at 5000 ft... We had to go back to the valley instead of passing the ridge...Alain
July 27, 200421 yr Author Looks like we have the same problem as in Australia. I wonder if it is the same in other mid latitude areas that have mountain snow in winter such as Cyprus, Lebanon, the Atlas Mountains, the Andes and the small glaciers in Irian Jaya (nearly on the equator but at 16000 feet). For a sim that covers the whole world maybe we are a bit picky but the Australian situation stands out because the snow area is right under the main flight path between Sydney and Melbourne.Bruce Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened."
