December 4, 201213 yr Okay call me a laggard, I know but after 7 years, just migrated to 10 from 9 and got Acceleration. Been fooling around with sliders and cfg tweaks, I'm running a plain FSX except a few add ons that also compatible for both fs9/fsx. Until I am comfortable with my new sim, I'll invest later. Having few hours with the F18, it is actually not bad at all. I'm pretty sure VRS has a more realistic superbug but for a free addon that comes with the package, I think I am more than just like it. Should I be worried about my taste? I'm browsing the net to enhance the F18, so far I got a sound pack which is not bad at all and some good liveries from AVSIM and other 'FSX Accel F18 community' forum. Is there anyone else here? I'd like to hear some suggestions how to make the most of it regards
December 4, 201213 yr I think there's some mod for the HUD available. Search for 'NEW Realistic HUD for the FSX Acceleration F/A-18 Hornet' via Google if you like.
December 4, 201213 yr I like it a lot. Carrier landings are very challenging. I like to fire up some heavy metal music and fly just above ground level in the Rockies. That's how I recoup after a hard day at work. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
December 4, 201213 yr Also a number of good mods at Simviation. Liveries and such. Different HUD glass transparencies. Radio stack addon that includes ILS / DME info in the HUD. I think you can find some mod'd air / cfg files.
December 4, 201213 yr Some neat fixes: http://fsxblueangels.com/fix%20dowloads%20template.html Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
December 5, 201213 yr It's even better when you use the HaniMod v3 version of it. Yes hours after I posted this I downloaded the complete overhaul of Hanibal's Mod 3. Shorter gear and detailed liveries, it is heavier also compared to the default one, guess it is closer to realism. I like it a lot. Carrier landings are very challenging. I like to fire up some heavy metal music and fly just above ground level in the Rockies. That's how I recoup after a hard day at work. Maan... I double that! When I was in hi school I listened to Deftones and RATM a lot, put on my headset, CTRL E and rock on !! It takes 23 minutes or so to fire up my Maddog 2010 in my fs9, I never knew that flying a jet fighter is indeed a lot of fun. Thanks guys.. and uuhmm.. where's the carrier located?
December 5, 201213 yr and uuhmm.. where's the carrier located? There's a couple things you can do for that... you can download from the AVSIM Library Javier's Nimitz carrier package (I have no experience here with that one but I hear it is the bees knees). use the default moving carriers... by finding using Simtour's Aircraft Carrier in Default Scenery Schedule. Make sure to follow directions carefully (like setting "high" ship density - 45% worked for me). flying the Carrier Tutorial or Carrier Practice mission. I would also recommend installing something like the Realistic HUD for the FSX Acceleration F/A-18 Hornet from Simviation. Gives you ILS / TACAN (DME) info. It's nice having the ILS needles as the meatball can be tough to see until close in... and having DME info is nice too. Default Carrier ILS Freq. is 111.00MHz -Rob
December 5, 201213 yr This: http://forum.avsim.n...t/#entry2440532 If you have questions, feel free to ask. Just please, please forget about default acceleration carrier and forget about modding that horrible default Hornet with realistic HUD. Cheers, George.
December 5, 201213 yr Just please, please forget about default acceleration carrier and forget about modding that horrible default Hornet with realistic HUD. The default Hornet is not "terrible"... I have many, many hours just doing traps using the default carrier & Hornet (actually I now use the {now defunct?} TGS carrier software, but it is the default carrier). Just because it makes you work hard, does not make it terrible in my book. Whether you have many hours with the FSX Hornet or none at all... Dino'sT-45C is a joy to fly and makes traps "a walk in the park"... highly recommend this one if you are just starting to practice carrier traps. As you can see from the thread George posted.... one Hornet HUD mod is available here at AVSIM Library. Maybe I should re-check out Javier's mod... tho quite nice, the last time I used it, I felt the ships (CBG) grouped way too close together and way too close to Kaneohe (iirc). Plus I found it so much nicer just to fire up a mission (e.g. the TGS was built this way) fly a half dozen traps or so and "move on". Also... flying with friends... they may not have the Javier stuff (none of mine did).

If default hornet is so great, why do you think those guys spend so much time tweaking it? Trust me, after a couple of flight hours and traps you'll speak different. I've been around the block for a while and those guys know their stuff. And by the way: Dino'sT-45C is a joy to fly and makes traps "a walk in the park"... highly recommend this one if you are just starting to practice carrier traps. Yes, that's why I mentioned it in that post I linked. It's better for rookies to learn traps with trainer, just like in real life. Plus it's nice airplane to have. Plus I found it so much nicer just to fire up a mission (e.g. the TGS was built this way) fly a half dozen traps or so and "move on". What difference does it make? I pop up the AIcarriers menu, place carrier wherever I want and land there. Plus there is mission for it as well, but I can't remember how was that called. Also... flying with friends... they may not have the Javier stuff (none of mine did). Then tell them. And for multiplayer sessions there is multiplayer mission with carrier near SF available. (and maybe it was in the same package with that singleplayer mission I mentioned above, I'll try to find it) It's not perfect, but I think it's better than hunting ugly default carrier somewhere. At the end, it's up to you, fly whatever suits you. I just wanted to give people some alternatives and show them that they can actually improve their carrier operations in FSX. Cheers, George.
December 5, 201213 yr Just try everything uncle George recommended and you'll see for yourself  Cheers, George.
