April 17, 201313 yr Of course it's also important to remember that this Trek "series" exists only in film.. the requirements for a film and the factors that determine its success are much different from a TV series. I'm not saying I prefer the crash-boom-bang action of these new films, just pointing out that this is the reality for a major feature film. I am a hardcore trekky that grew up watching Star Trek btw.

April 24, 201313 yr What amazes me is that no matter how far into the future a movie is set, no matter how technologically advanced the weaponry or the transportation systems, it all still comes down to two guys slugging it out. Yawn yawn yawn. This Trek franchise has never taken hold with me. Probably because Im 60 years old and have fond memories of going next door as a kid to watch the original "in color" with my neighbor buddy, old Mr. Jesse James (yes, that was is name). This reboot bores me.

Some guy decides he wants to destroy everything and of all the Star Fleet personnel only Kirk can save the day with Spock. They both go about with little to no help, blow a bunch of things up including wreaking the Enterprise, and get off without a single reprimand. Totally expected, totally boring, no surprises outside of the usual Hollywood wiz bangs effects. A great story would have been fixing the timeline but that's too much like right I guess... Kinda made the point. Every adventure I can think of from Beowulf to Aladdin to Huckleberry Fin has a hero (or antihero) and a villain. Remove those elements and there pretty much aren't all that many books or movies left in the Adventure or Sci-Fi genre and Star Trek has never been a romance...... Plus, you pretty much just described James T. Kirk as he has always been. He was like that in the good old days of Trek as well (kissed every girl, ignored all the rules, kicked the bad guys butt) including in the novels. I cant even imagine the unhappiness I would probably be hearing (especially on YouTube) if they went about changing something that essential to the character. We are all connected..... Kirk wasn't doing what's depicted in this movie, heck I'd bet Gene R is turning over in his grave. This reminds me of the stupid new approach that was taken with Sherlock Holmes or the silly Charlies Angels movie that came out a few years ago. Kirk has been turned into one of the Avengers and the Enterprise bridge crew now is basically X-Men. Star Trek was originally trying to show us what the future could look like for man in a realistic way. Many of the gadgets we have today were inspired by Star Trek (iPhone, iPad, etc). That's the power of a great visionary. This new crap is mindless entertainment (at least that's what I got from the first movie). Before anyone get's started we can nullify the term 'Entertainment' but there's distinct differences in approaches. With products like Flight Simulator for example you have titles that actually teach and inspire that people grow from with personal use then you have Ace Combat, their both classified as 'Entertainment'. One of them is giving something back to society and inspiring future dreams and goals the other is quickly forgotten as it's only purpose was a quick cash cow... Gene and Rick Berman accomplished creating a world we could all wrap our heads around that had many similarities to what we struggle with today. I actually could see the intricate social issues we would face if we co-opted with alien beings for a United Federation. This is much like the United Nations we have here on Earth. What's up with Hollywood being totally unable to create an original franchise these days for the kind of stuff they want to produce? The same formula is being used for every Sci-Fi movie, even Sherlock Holmes became an Avenger. I hate when existing serious material that's well thought out get's treated in this thoughtless manner. Instead of adding or preserving a legacy it's made a mockery out of. This new Star Trek falls in the latter category going by the last effort. I haven't bothered adding it to my Star Trek collection. Hollywood needs to get out of Reality T.V. mode and get back to hiring some skilled writers (many are outstanding and starving these days). It's easy to stick a camera in someones living room and watch the train wreak (Housewives, Honey Booboo) but to truly produce something of quality takes effort studios aren't willing to do these days. Rehashing and ruining great work is becoming the norm, I'm surprised they haven't brought back Wonder Woman. April 26, 201313 yr Author Star Trek Into Darkness has in fact already been released in some parts of the world, and if you are not afraid of spoilers (for instance, if you are determined not to see the movie) then there are already a few reviews here and there. Most reviews are good with one caveat: Most believe there was too much "fan service" specifically in the latter half of the film, meaning moments significant only/mostly to Trekkers, and largely lost on everybody else; making them tend to fall a bit flat on the larger audience. I stand corrected, maybe this is worth seeing after all... Usually when there's pieces like this in a film it's for greater character development and piecing together a larger story.
