April 29, 201313 yr Author I might see that as well! In the meanwhile, an exclusive clip. Seems pretty tense. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2316404/Star-Trek-Into-Darkness-Captain-Kirk-confronts-villain-board-Enterprise-new-clip.html I can see why one of the reviewers said Benedict Cumberbatch seems to stand over the crew of the Enterprise as a character. May 20, 201313 yr I'm sorry but I have very low expectations for this movie, I'm actually more excited to see what Disney's Planes has in store... Saw this movie today with my wife and daughter. With my being the only one in the family who actually saw Star Trek in the 60's certainly helps in understanding the character dynamics, but even without that background my wife and daughter enjoyed the movie. Without describing the plot, since I don't want to spoil the film for anyone, I enjoyed this movie the most of all the Star Trek films, other than "IV - A Voyage Home". The trailer actually left me thinking I wouldn't enjoy the movie that much since it seemed all action and little in the way of character dynamics. I felt the movie had both elements, enough to appeal to most Trek fans. Only reason I saw it is I went out to dinner with the family to celebrate a coming birthday, and wanted to do something other than go home. Anyway I think it's worth seeing and the trailer(s) don't give much away. Regards, John

May 20, 201313 yr Any correction of the time line which was destroyed in the last film? Yes and no. It would be hard to explain without giving away some of the plot. What I can say is planet Vulcan is still no more, and Admiral Pike (who of course was severely injured as Captain Pike in the original series, as shown in the Menagerie Parts 1 and 2) is still fairly healthy in this movie. For diehard fans of the old timeline, what I will say is this movie shows that history, try as we can to change it, has a way of coming back at us. (For those who don't know the original series, here is a link to the episode I refer to--one of my favorites, my other favorite being the Next Generation's episode, "The Inner Light"): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Menagerie_%28Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series%29 John
May 21, 201313 yr This movie was great and I do like the direction they are taking it. I won't say anything either as it would be a major spoiler so just go and see it. My GF is discovering Star Trek for the first time with these new films so I am forever having to explain to her the references back to the original series and films. She is a huge Big Bang Theory fan and is starting to make a connection to Star Trek because of that show. She now wants to watch Wrath Of Khan after seeing that last one. My wife told me this morning that my daughter really, really enjoyed the movie and her crush continues on Captain Kirk (Chris Pine). A day later I still consider it the most entertaining movie I've seen in a long time. I would suggest fans consider renting the 2009 movie if they've never experienced the franchise. That one movie would be enough to make this one thoroughly enjoyable. John
May 21, 201313 yr Most reviews are good with one caveat: Most believe there was too much "fan service" specifically in the latter half of the film, meaning moments significant only/mostly to Trekkers, and largely lost on everybody else; making them tend to fall a bit flat on the larger audience. If you understand what he's talking about, you should make sure to rent "Galaxy Quest." It's about the "crew" of a cancelled cult TV show, making the round of the conventions of the faithful, when the real aliens show up... I'm an old Trekkie, now 66. I watched the originals when they were in first-run TV. I watched with my Mom, who was also a Trekkie. I wrote a letter to the network as part of the successful fan campaign to keep the show alive. I may be unusual, because Next Generation was my favorite of all the incarnations of the show. I like the first re-boot movie, and I'm looking forward to this one. She now wants to watch Wrath Of Khan after seeing that last one. Don't forget to watch "Das Boot" and maybe "Run Silent, Run Deep" to understand that Wrath of Khan is as much a submarine-destroyer movie as at is science fiction.

I like these references these Sci Fi writers make to World War 2. I just read that the final scene in Star Wars where the tie fighters flew along those trenches to fire a torpedo into that exhaust port was related to the Dam Busters. I thought that was pretty cool as well. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Babylon 5 was one of the only productions to actually use realistic trajectories for spacecraft, rather than making them "fly" like winged airplanes in an atmosphere.

One of the most humorous things in Star Wars (and some other science fiction films) is hearing the sound of the spacecraft's engines, lasers, etc.... in external space action sequences. There is no air in space, and hence no sound. But obviously the sound makes for more immersive action sequences (and makes for more nominations for best sound effects editing in the Oscars  ). That alone is one of the reasons I really love David Drake's "Honorverse" series. True space battles will take place within such truly HUGE areas of space that most will be days of utter boredom followed by only seconds of stark terror as the two fleets flash past one another in a furious exchange of laser-pumped warheads delivered by multi-drive missles, gravlance pulses, and graser/laser point defense fire. May 23, 201313 yr There is no air in space, and hence no sound. And thus the great line from the ads for the original Alien: "In space, no one can hear you scream." And that always makes me imagine a picture of a helmeted astronaut in space with a disgusted look on his face, and the caption "In space, no one can smell your farts."
May 30, 201313 yr Author In the movie, if you listen carefully, you can hear mention of using a trading vessel confiscated "In the recent Mudd incident." Harry Mudd is on the loose!! :-) We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.
