Star Trek: Into Darkness (movie trailer)

Featured Replies

I thought that Space Odyssey 2001 did a great job with this. Those spacewalk scenes made me tense with the breathing inside the helmet and utter silence from the exterior shots.

Otherwise, I'm not aware of any other movie that attempts this.

Very true. Hopefully we see more of this in the future especially battle scenes. To see this done right would be awesome.

If you are a closet Star Trek junkie like I am, or even if your openly...... "flamboyant" about your sci-fi preferences :P .........You will enjoy this movie!!    as mentioned earlier, there are so many subtle details about this movie that are geared toward the serious Star trek viewer.

Dillon, I'm not really clear on what it is about the alternate timeline that bothers you so much?........the big significant role that Vulcans played in introducing humans to the rest of the Alfa quadrant has already happened......so I don't really understand why the premise of the first movie is such deal breaker for you?

Anyways......do yourself a favour and go enjoy the ride (in 3D B) )

Cheers

I am willing to make a bet that this new series of Star trek will end with the timeline being corrected and it will be as if none of it ever happened,

Remember the final scene in the first movie when Young Spock meets Old Spock? Old Spock told Young Spock to continue with Starflight and Old Spock was going to go with the surviving Vulcans and has selected a planet to colonize.....

Well what do you think Old Spock is working on out there on that planet? Do you actually think he is colonizing Vulcans? He is definitely working on ways to reverse the timline. This is the only way to save the planet Vulcan.

It has happened before so the last Star Trek film in this series will definitely end with the timeline restored and as if none of it ever happened......Just you wait and see.

If it doesn't end with the timeline restored then that would mean that Star Trek TNG, Deep Space Nine and Voyager can never happen. We all know that it did happen so this is why Abrams will restore it.

I think it is brilliant as it created a way for Abrams to create a film series in a different direction, that has been a lot of fun so far, but will end it in a way for which none of it ever happened, thus restoring the Star Trek Franchise to its original timeline.

...............Interesting

...............Interesting

To clarify I will go and see this movie but I'm waiting to see if Matthew is right and the story goes back to the original time line.  Actually the new time line opens up a whole new reality for Star Trek if they keep on course and the writing is as good as Rick Berman and Gene's effort.  You could start out with these movies and develop an whole new T.V. show.  Star Trek has always bent the rule of time in the past so this is no different.  The first movie was just stupid to me and only with an outstanding second and third movie will the story explain itself.  Sounds like things are on a good path so far.

Remember Star Trek the Motion Picture was just long drawn out and confusing, it was trying too much to be like 2001 A Space Oddysey, then all of a sudden Wrath of Khan was the coolest Star Trek film ever....Who can ever forget Kirk yelling out "KHAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNN". If anyone remembers that scene then the latest Star Trek film is a must.

That is a distinct possibility if one is married to the idea that there can be only one timeline...

However, if one believes in an infinitely expanding number of parallel universes each with it's own unique timeline, then that's a different case entirely!

In the Original Series remember that this situation has already been explored, when Kirk and Spock were swapped with their "evil counterparts" from a parallel universe/timeline!

I believe this is more what the writers of the new films have in mind.  I have doubts that they will in any way "fix" the timeline.

I don't mind the concept of the alternate timeline, however, after seeing this latest movie, I wish they would utilize it a bit better.  Personally, I was completely disappointed with what seemed like a lackluster effort on the part of the writers.  That and I do not know what the person that cast Cumberbatch was thinking!  He made a good antagonist, but a really bad choice for his role.  Did they really expect me to believe that just because it is an alternate timeline that the main antagonist's ethnicity, voice, appearance, and personality should also be alternate?  Why does everyone else, somewhat look and act like they did in the prime universe except for "the antagonist".

Other than that the movie had too many pointless scenes that did little to explain, nor add to the story and it seemed to forget at several points that it is Star Trek.  As an action movie, I would give it a C+, as a Star Trek movie, it is a solid F.  I have always thought of Star Trek as a drama, not action.  For those who like explosions and guns, this movie will entertain.  For those who are looking for a thought-provoking, well-planned story that feels like Star Trek, you will most likely be disappointed.

Sometimes it feels like I'm living in the evil parallel universe with all the crap going one. Anyway all incarnations of Star Trek explored this in various episodes, Deep Space Nine more than others.

My feeling is that Kirk is immersed within a giant simulation program to test his courage, leadership, and insight, similar to the Kobayashi Maru test which he cheated on.  At some point, the program will end and Kirk will be in the real timeline.

John

If they were to fix the timeline (I doubt they will), my guess would be (judging by the amount of reused IP in ST:ID):  Spock prime, with all of his knowledge devises a way to enter the Nexus without destroying stars (heck, I guess it doesn't matter if he does).  With the help of the Enterprise crew he manages to enter the Nexus. Once there, he can travel to a time before Romulus' destruction and create his red jelly ball "anti-genesis" stuff.  By doing so he can avert the explosion of Romulus and render everything that J.J Abrams has done pointless.

The above is not meant to be taken seriously.

I really hope JJ goes with an original story for the next movie.  ST:ID had a good story going for about the first 45 minutes (give or take), then it was all downhill.

To clarify, all the crap that's going on in the world (Boston, London, Cleveland for example).  Star Trek has always been a marker of where we hope things will go for man kind in the future.

Yeah, I got your point right away, Dillon. I too often feel as though I've fallen into the wrong (crap) timeline myself!
