Thinking of replacing my AS2012 with Opus

Featured Replies

Why replace? Yesterday I flew an F-86 (sorry... Sabre Mk.4) out of Boscombe Down at low level around the Southampton coast using Opus and later in the day AAL440 from KDFW to KBDL using AS. I let AS configure itself for up high and leave the settings, and use Opus for anything with a three or four numbered 'cruise' altitude.

Any weather program is going to have the popping. I do like Opus but the more I fly in constantly changing weather the more I notice the cloud pops. Sometimes we don't notice them because we're heads down in cockpit or looking at charts etc.

I think what Opus offers over other weather stuff is the camera config and the "wide fs" style program. Of course opus doesn't have cloud textures. I don't use anything except the weather.

The biggest issue I'm having is the stupid "Circle of Clear" right around my acft. I swear it was fixed when I installed OPUS but not it seems to follow me even with the obvious OVC conditions around, example in this video I made:

I think the key to ASE or AS2012 is to make sure CloudDensity in the FSX.CFG file is set to 12. I was all set to go to OPUS a month ago, but then read about this setting, I tried it and what a difference it makes, I can now get a full overcast sky, and IMC is very good. The only 2 problems is it reverts back to 8 if any setting changes are made, so I have to watch out for that. Also FSX stil doesn't show fog looking down until you are below it's ceiling, then it pops in. Does OPUS fix this issue? I've watched a number of videos with OPUS but haven't seen any with this scenario yet, that would indicate whether or not, OPUS has the same issue!

Thanks

Have the wind shift issues and temp issues been fixed in Opus? Cloud depiction is just one of the features of a weather engine, but it seems the hardest part is the transition from low to high altitude flight.

AS2012 does this very well all around, has its own textures, no wind shifts and good temp feature at high levels. For what I read some users were having issues with this in Opus, and yes, I realise it is an ongoing beta, just interested to know if it has improved.

I wonder why nobody is talking about AS' killer feature #1: historic wather?!

Ditto for REX. I'm just not that fond of FSX winter depictions, so it's really nice to be able to select an arbitrary date in spring/summer/fall and still fly with RW wx from that date.

I have and still enjoy Opus, but there are a number of reasons why I still use the new REX engine more often - and I'm sure many AS users feel the same.

Make sure your CloudDensity setting in fsx.cfg file is set to 12. I'm sure this should help OPUS too.

Thanks

I have turned my cloud density in sim from Max to High, and draw distance reduced from 100 to 80.

Having cloud density at 12 is ok on a clear or fair etc day. In stormy or even slightly stormy weather so much cloud will be generated that at least in my I7990 system @ 4.6 Ghz system would stutter and FPS down to single digits.

So far AS2012 works ok for me, tried latest rex, and that had more stutters than any rex i ever used previously.

Dear All,

Despite AS2012 being a quantum leap vs FSX weather, I still experience lots of clouds redraws in mid flight :( (Using DWC and all the latest patches).

A few post have suggested Opus seem to have solved that issue. What are you views/experiences.

Best Regards

You really should check with AS forums, I have no issue with AS12.

Yeah I see it reset to 8 like you said grrrr. Hopefully I can make a saved cfg of 12.

For me, OPUS produces great weather, is simple to use and I have now started using the camera effects and done away with EZdok but read on........

I have to say that I have become a fan of OPUS. I also own the other two major contenders of weather add ons. I have been following it's developement almost daily for a while now. All of my flying is low and slow and usually very local to my home airport. The weather to this point has been spot on and I love the fact that it takes only seconds to be up and running. Since I don't have to be concerned with the wind problems at altitudes like the tubliners, I don't get quite as emotional as others here.

For years now, I have seen many folks that swear that AS or REX gives them perfect or near perfect weather if you only make this setting or that tweak. In most cases they make no difference or little difference on my computer. On the flip side of things, there have also been settings that do help. If you have been around this hobby for more than a day or two, you have or should have realized that every single computer used is at least in some small ways, different than all the others. You simply are not always going to get the same results as others in every instance. It's a bit like asking me if you would like my fav cake. To me it taste great, but I have no way of knowing if you will like it and it may even make you ill. The approach of AS and REX is to release fixes and patches that work for the most common problems reported. This is common practice of most companies and there is nothing wrong with it. This is also where OPUS has taken a very different approach.

It is true that OPUS is in the Beta phase and it is made very clear in the forums. Some one commented that they have a new release every day like that is a bad thing. It takes mayby two minutes to delete the program and download a new zip or .msi file and install. Why so many Betas? It is because they take every reported problem and work to solve it either on the spot or within hours. This approach seems to have turned the software into a living thing that just gets better every day. Is it for everyone? Nope not yet, but I am betting that the time will come when they are the top dog at the show. Take a bit of time and read through the Forums and you will see a vey positive and user friendly approach to software.

There's nothing to say you can't have both.

If I'm flying the A2A Mustang or any GA stuff, low altitude etc I'll use Opus.

If I'm flying the big jets, AS2012 with winds and fuel planning.

Me too, great combo :)
