MSFlight and War Thunder

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, been playing War Thunder a lot (well, at least trying it out) and the more I fiddle with it, the more I think it and MSflight are twins separated at birth. Though the interface and the aim (combat) are completely different, the feel, the sounds, the shadows, and even the venue (Hawaii) are strikingly similar in so many ways that again and again I find myself thinking that this is what MSFlight could have been if MS had cared enough to push forwards with it.

I think all true flight fans owe themselves the opportunity of at least taking a look at it, and the download is free. http://warthunder.com/

Now tell me this does not remind you of Flight! (Even the textures, and yes, this is Hawaii)

Hi HiFlyer :-)

And I am the man of all the sims ;-) hey?

Well, I have been following the amazing screens and a few videos from War-Thunder mostly through Simon's posts at the XSimReviews blog, and exchanging a few messages with him about the superb graphics and immersive environment.

Your comparison with MS FLIGHT is on spot, to say the least :-)

But... it's an expensive experience, or can easily turn into one, at $25/month, no?

Honestly I am not sure how it works. The rewards system seems optional unless you get into the fighting, and I am mostly content with putt-putting around in single player. I purchased the pacific and american scenarios for $19.99 (Curiosity) but that's it so far, and I am not sure why I would buy anything else unless I intended to fight a lot.

That being said, I have tried the fighting and its surprisingly fun, but not enough to draw me into paying for a super plane.

I am more interested in the fact that at max settings I cant get it to drop below 59fps and that the graphics are absolutely breathtaking. Enough to make somebody accustomed to FSX pretty much cry.

I'm an occasional WT simmer as well. But something about WT makes me nervous. Note the Malwarebytes warning pop-up in the following screen shot.

launcherScreenShot.jpg

It shows that the launcher process has attempted to contact a site known to be suspicious. A look at the Malwarebytes log shows multiple attempts to various sites blocked. A whois look-up of these sites shows then to be in China, Romania, Poland, etc. Some show up on Internet lists of spam/malware sites.

I posted my concerns about this to the WT forum. The reaction was dismissive: obviously false positives, thousands have played the game without problems, you're over-reacting, etc. Well, maybe....

Nevertheless, my advice is to have some industrial strength anti-malware running if you dabble in WT. I seem to have picked up a rootkit search redirector which remains invisible to anything I've tried yet to fix it. I'm not saying it came from using WT, but those Malwarebytes pop-ups don't make me feel good about it.

Have not seen anything like that at all with Mcafee..........

Edit: Come to think of it, War Thunder acts as a PTP connection and shares out the file for other downloaders unless you disallow it. That popped up on installation and I turned that off without even giving it a second thought until now..........

Ah, didn't notice that option. Thanks for the steer. Will check it out.

On the client screen, click the asterisk next to the graphics modes and untick "Seed after downloading"

Thanks for the hint; might not have been able to figure this out. But....

I started the launcher and unticked the "Seed" box. While the launcher was updating files, Malwarebytes reported the following:

2012/12/26 12:55:53 -0500 BLACKSUN Geo IP-BLOCK 89.28.93.246 (Type: outgoing, Port: 27032, Process: launcher.exe)

2012/12/26 12:56:41 -0500 BLACKSUN Geo IP-BLOCK 31.133.45.196 (Type: outgoing, Port: 27032, Process: launcher.exe)

2012/12/26 12:57:13 -0500 BLACKSUN Geo IP-BLOCK 91.188.44.23 (Type: outgoing, Port: 27032, Process: launcher.exe)

89.28.93.246 is in Chisinau, Moldova. Internet comments say that this site attempts to load a Trojan via Skype.

31.133.45.196 is in Makiyivka, Ukraine. The Project Honey Pot system has detected behavior from the IP address consistent with that of a mail server. But it adds that this IP has not seen any suspicious activity within the last 3 months. This IP is most likely clean and trustworthy now.

91.188.44.23 is in Riga, Latvia. I didn't find any net comments on this IP.

Maybe the launcher needs to be restarted with seed box unticked. I'll try again after the file download completes.

Ah, good comparison Devon, I'm about to say the same thing re. MS Flight vs WT! I've been too busy dogfighting to slowly expore Hawaii, but have flown peacefully around England and Stalingrad, absolutely gorgeous! And their last update has even better Antialiasing. I'm seriously smitten by this sim and it's only early days.

No probs with malware this end, I think!

Does a "superplane" mean any multi- engine bomber? I would try it out only to fly some larger planes which is really missing from Flight. Not really interested in combat fighting. What are the cockpits and controls like?

Again, perhaps the best comparison would be with MSFlight! Like Flight, War Thunder turns out to be surprisingly deep and detailed, and has several control modes from "Mouse aim" (sound familiar?) to "Simplified" to "Realistic" to "Full"

Prop pitch, mixture, flaps, Ailerons and all the goodies including left and right wheel brakes are available.

The biggest change in non-combat flying is that all the planes I have seen have cockpits. (Corrected per Simmo W) In fact, as far as the actual "Feel" of the game, that is one of the biggies, representing "the road not taken."

Coming back from one to the other, you can really see even better the potential of Flight! in the right hands, and in aircraft "feel" and "handling" the two sims are neck and neck, which is pretty remarkable when you think about it.

I think about flight a lot when flying in War Thunder. Flights Carbon Cub in WT's Hawaii for instance would be ecstasy.

Sorry no, not all planes, ESP the bombers, have cockpits yet. I think they will eventually provide pits for the bombers though.

Yes controls are excellent and sensitivity can be nicely adjusted. Some planes have very noticeable torque effects.

Im at level 6 and bought my first $25 of Golden Eagles currency about 10 days ago. It should last me a month. Using those credits to accelerate your crew's training works well. Once crew is upgraded, it can work on any plane, so I'll save on credits then, meaning the next $25 will last far longer.

Super planes can also be faster single engined fighters. If all you want is bigger planes, I'd steer clear for now as no virtual cockpits exist for them. But the flight feel and joy of bombing distant targets is there. I can bomb from 15,000 ft, most epic feel! Good credits too :-)

I stand corrected! I have seen no planes without cockpits yet though, but then, I am taking it slow and not spending any cash. :P

The fighting I have done is as I said surprisingly fun, but I prefer a nice scenic flight really. In fact, last night I saw a locked game being run by "The Vegans" and got a chuckle, as I imagined it was a bunch of people not wanting to fight and who were probably just flying around peacefully in there.

I will pretty much leave it here, as I had intended this pretty much to be just a heads-up!

War Thunder Arcade Joyride! (Lowish details)
