Powerfull Laptop to run FSX - MSI or AW?

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm going to uni next year to study engineering/sci and I need to get myself a decent laptop. The only thing I would really be using it for would be internet surfing, watching movies/videos etc, uni stuff (there is a compulsary comptuer programming course), maybe some casual gaming and of course FSX.

Now I'm not looking at getting a budget system, I want to be able to fly in FSX with ORBX sceneries and carenado planes with medium high graphic settings. That being said I need to keep spending to a min - anything above $3000 needs to be seriously worth it. I've had my eye on these systems for a while and I need some help on decinding which one is best for FSX, and indeed if there are any other options to consider :)

1st system: MSI GT70 0NE (~ $3200)

  • 16GB RAM -1600MHz(4x4 memory modules)
  • 3rd Gen i7 -3630QM - (2.4 - 3.4GHz turbo boost), 45W, 6Mb cache
  • GeFore GTX 680M - 4GB GDDR5
  • Windows 8 - 64bit
  • 2yrs warranty
  • 17.3'' FHD 1920x1080 res LED backilit anit-glare screen
  • 2x128GB mSATA SSD superRAID0 (primary)
  • 750GB 7200 rpm HDD

more details here http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/d426_msi-gt70-laptop-notebook.html

2nd system: Alienware M17x (~ $3120)

  • 12GB RAM - 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2x2GB + 2X4GB)
  • 3rd Generation i7-3740QM - (2.7 - 3.7GHz turbo boost), 6Mb cache
  • GeForce GTX 680M - 2GB DDR5
  • Windows 7 home - 64bit (Will probably change to win 8 soon I would think)
  • 1yr warranty
  • 17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD
  • 750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?

- I don't know if this is the answer you want or not,

But I suggest you buy a decent laptop (around $500) for Internet surfing & general use!

- Then buy yourself a beast PC (around $2000) for FSX and gaming..

Save the rest!

With the laptops you mentioned, you’re paying so much for lower performance.. (compared to PC)

I agree I use my 6 year old Hp laptop for all my school stuff at UA but just built a rig for fsx and skyrim and spent like 1k and can finally run full settings

I've a weaker laptop which performs reasonably well with FSX (+ addons aircraft, OrbX sceneries, Opus), see specs besides, so both will work well.

Alienware is overpriced IMO but my laptop is from MSI and has a non glare screen that I am not satisfied of as I find it greyish and grainy .

Take a laptop with a large SSD and as much memory in the graphic card as possible

See Asus, the last generation looks good.

I just ordered an Alienware m14x with i7-3840 (max 3.8), hybrid drive, 2 gig ddr5 nividia 650, etc. Good pricing this week. I need portability.

If you want the laptop with the fastest cpu on the planet, and SLI two of the best gpus, see m-tech.

They have lesser models too of course.

The M8900 is a bargain at the price.

I bought an Mtech laptop back in Jan '08. Ran great, no problems...
