Anti ice operations

Posted some information you might find useful in the forum a few days ago - Anti ice usage and N1% -

To answer you question briefly we have nothing but our eagle eyes!! We can expect icing in icing conditions (visible moisture and SAT/TAT below 10C)

The first clue would be ice forming below the wiper blade, appearing in the corners of the flight deck window and on the wiper bolts. In moderate icing you can see the ice forming on the leading edge of the wing.

Many thanks Sam and although the clues you mention aren't automatic high tech they do seem very reliable and easy to spot to me.

One more thing, you always hear about this visible moisture - that includes clouds I assume? And if so that would mean during the winter season at least here in Sweden where I live you would use WAI or at least TAI on pretty much every flight? This since there's almost always some visible clouds while the temp at the same time almost always is below 10C.

Includes clouds, but only when you're in them.
