Question about SSD

Hi,

I have a SSD on my laptop and it has 240GB capacity so I installed FSX on a usb 3.0 external. My question is will it be faster to load if I move VFR sceneries I mostly use to SSD drive. Thanks

Yes, loading any file goes faster with a quality SSD.

Theoretically scenery should load faster, but overall FSX performance may not improve significantly. I say this because the real performance roadblocks on your system are the processor speed (on which FSX is heavily dependent), the GPU and the amount of GPU memory. An SSD can certainly serve up scenery files faster than a standard HDD, but on your system it will then run into these other bottlenecks. Definitely worth a try, though.

I don't think that my computer parts will be bottleneck If you check my specs. Thanks anyways I will give it a try. But I know that OrbX have some other files inside scenery folder in FSX and I can't move them without moving FSX.

Just tagging onto your thread - I recently read somewhere that SSD's have a Failure "Freeze" State, in which the drive is no longer usable. I don't know how long they operate before this gradual freeze state makes them just unusable as I am certain this varies per manufacturer - but in general this is a little known problem that is apparently being 'worked on' ?

 

This somewhat alarmed me because I was thinking when capacity and price got to a certain critical state I would purchase one. Anyone else heard of this

Its the Ram I am talking about. I have read technical reports where it gets stuck in an on or off mode. They where discussing heating the ram chips on the logic board to 'unfreeze' the frozen ram and had decided that as yet, this procedure was only a partial solution and not always successful
