OpusFSX + REX

Recommended Posts

Is anyone here using this combination in FSX? Is there a way to disable the REX weather engine? I just want to use Opus specifically for that purpose and leave REX to handle the textures and lighting only. What is the proper way to do this?

Hi,

Just run Rex to select your textures etc, then close Rex. (You do not need to run Rex again unless you want to change the textures. So you only need to run Rex once for that purpose.

Start FSX, load your flight, at the gate/runway, run Opus and set your cruise altitude and destination in the weather settings box, and away you go.

If you get stuck, go to the official opus forum at simmforums.

Oh, I thought I had to run REX each and everytime I start up FSX? So the only time I would ever have to run it again is if I change textures and stuff?

Correct. Set Rex textures you want, and forget.

I usually import my flight plan to REX. Then click WX influenced textures. After that I close REX.

This gives me different textures for my current flight. I like to have little variance which makes each flight unique.

That is indeed an option but it's not mandatory. I use the same texture set for months if not years and still every flight seems unique to me! There are more REX textures I do NOT like then I do like, so I like to choose my own (well... I am using NyxxUK's choice of textures now). Don't want to be surprised by ugly clouds or odd colored skies. ^_^

But even though I use REX for textures only, I did completely disable the REX weather engine (using the various REX options menu's) to make sure REX never ever does something with my weather. Simply untick everything you see that is weather related. ^_^

I usually use REX once or twice a year, only to change textures, and that's it. No need to run it everytime. In fact, you might even uninstall it completely and still the REX textures will be used (because they are installed into the FSX textures folders, overwriting the original ones.)

I use this combination and it has changed my flight sim world.

Yes you can use REX as a set it and forget mode, but I find it much more stimulating to run REX occasionally (or even daily) to randomly set the cloud textures. That combined with the OPUS real weather rendering makes it so that each time I go into the FSX world, it is something new ... and exciting.

I load the REX textures then load just the AS2012 cloud textures as they look more realistic on my three monitor rig. After that I just use AS2012 for the weather and flip to Opus as the weather engine when I feel the need.

Depending on how I'm feeling if I start from a field near to where I live I just look out the window and choose whichever weather engine looks similar to the conditions out the window. It's surprising how often they are dissimilar.

Does Opus wx engine have winds aloft correctly modeled?

Yes it does.

Hi,

I read that opusfsx does not make soft changes between weather stations and are abrupt clouds changes, is this true? I'm considering give opusfsx a try.

Thanks,
